Liz Truss resigns as Prime Minister. Small businesses respond

Finally Liz Truss has made the correct decision to resign as PM. We need a general election now, for the sake of the economy. The longer this merry-go-round of prime ministerial mediocrity continues, the greater the damage to our country that will be done.

All she had to do was come in, freeze energy bills and take 20p a litre off petrol and diesel, and then keep quiet for a bit. She'd have been hailed a hero and be riding high in the polls. Instead Liz Truss gave us totally bizarre decisions and utter chaos. What on earth happens next is anybody's guess.

Liz Truss's resignation will be welcomed by the markets in general, however they will still be wary of who will follow. The past six months have been a mess not just for the Conservative Party but the nation as a whole. We need stability for the next two years and a return to the 2019 Manifesto pledges to ensure stability and a pathway to recovery. A general election now is not the answer. Whilst the Labour Party may assert this is the only way to move forward, I do not believe the country will welcome that or another Labour Government. The most likely result of an election now would be a hung parliament, which would be even worse for the country.

It was clear she could not carry on, as there were no avenues or U-turns left. I am frankly embarrassed by our Government. What has happened to this country? This is a drama even the writers of The Crown couldn't cook up. So what next? Or who? Can we PLEASE choose someone with credibility and a plan? Oh wait.

You have to give her credit here, as she has finally made the correct choice. However, too much damage has already been done since she became PM. There is now a massive job to fix this for the new PM. The Tories now need to unite and work together for the sake of the country.

Another day on the hamster wheel of British politics. What is the point in the time and expense of another leadership race? The Tories are a complete shambles with infighting at every turn. Until we have a general election we are stuck with this cycle of unending mediocrity at the top with jobs for mates. Get us a general election quickly and let us have a say.

We had a sweepstake in the office that our fridge lettuce would last longer than Liz Truss would last in office. We are now all enjoying a nice ploughman's with said lettuce this afternoon.

Well what a fabulous 44 days that was Liz. Thanks for tanking the markets and screwing over borrowers. This is what happens when a Liberal flips to the Tory party and then tries to be a Liberal. I hope the door doesn't hit you on the way out. Now SMEs will be asked to bail out the country, whilst the large corporates continue to dodge their taxes.

Liz Truss's resignation was insincere, she was smirking and made no apology for the mess she has made of our economy. We could all see weeks ago the shambles she was making of our economy. Let's change the black door at No. 10 to a revolving door. All confidence lost in anyone running our country and sorting out our failing economy.

She had to go. She was not up to the job and had lost the trust of her MPs, the markets and the electorate. Really, the lot of them should go, we need a general election.

It's hard to believe a PM could leave the country in a worse state than they found it in only 44 days. Especially as it was in a pretty bad way when she took over. People are struggling and it feels like the only sensible option is a General Election. I want to feel optimistic but honestly, what's next?

Thank you very much Liz Truss for your absolutely fantastic long service in your outstanding 44 days as leader. You have finally managed to nail that coffin shut. General Election required ASAP. Let's bring back BoJo, if only to give us all a good laugh before our winter of discontent.

I despair. The level of ineptitude and uncertainty in this most recent cabinet is only matched by the level of dishonesty and self-interest in the previous one.

Ding Dong the witch is gone! Finally, after weeks of being useless she has taken the hint and hit the bricks. I have no idea which of the sorry lot will replace her but it will be interesting to see, as long as they don't mess around picking the new leader. Hopefully this will mean more economic certainty and interest rates relax slightly, but I doubt it will happen quickly.

If Boris enters the race with Sunak, the Tory membership will overwhelmingly vote for Boris through its electronic vote. Like with Truss, they will give fake reasons such as Boris's mandate from the public while ignoring his Trump-like track record. This will finally confirm the Tory membership is about race and not the leadership race.

Surely we need a general election? The Conservative party took weeks to choose Liz Truss, which clearly did not work. How can we trust them to choose another leader? Personally, I have no trust in the Conservative party now. They have been in power for 12 years yet behave as if they have just been elected. We are sick of levelling up and talk of growth. Surely it is time for the country to decide?

This could be a huge sigh of relief for mortgage borrowers, as Trussanomics has caused mayhem with interest rates. It has been a very difficult time for those securing a new mortgage in the past few weeks.

Hurrah! We can finally celebrate Liz Truss making the right call! Attagirl! She had the opportunity to make a real difference and, instead, she turned her back on the country. Without a general election, we won't recover, and there is no doubt in my mind that lives will be destroyed in the process.

The farce that is British politics right now needs to end. Call an election and see who does get the mandate. It's going to be a poisoned chalice of a job to take on, but the frankly embarrassing attempts at clinging onto power by the current mob transcends party politics and is nothing more than naked self interest. Sweep the board clean and start over, hopefully with politicians who care about the country as a whole rather than just their own bank balances.

Although arguably the most chaotic reign in UK politics is now over, much doubt lingers over the capabilities of the Tory party to deliver a credible economic solution. A lot of the early market reaction from the departure of Liz Truss is a good indication for the UK economy but it is just that, an indication. Much ambiguity surrounding the political and economic climate remains and will remain until a new Prime Minister and cabinet have been appointed. Much of the recent turmoil across the UK financial markets has been fuelled by uncertainty. Early indicators would suggest this a shift in the right direction, although there is a long way to go to restore confidence in the UK’s government. Liz Truss leaves behind a country in need of direction and with many calling for a general election, the question that now hangs over the UK political and economic climate is who is best to take the country forward.

I disagree with the majority view. The Tories should clear up their own mess. Let's start thinking and acting differently. A general election or leadership contest will not resolve the situation. A society based less on consumerism and materialism would be a good start.
