Rishi Sunak resigns

Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid have quit Boris Johnson's cabinet over a row over the handling of misconduct claims against ex-Deputy Chief Whip Chris Pincher. Any thoughts, write them down. Keep it short please.

The Cabinet has been like a crew aboard a life-raft on a river without a rudder and the Captain's moral compass has lost the plot. I now think the compass has completely broken off, the two main rowers have ditched their oars and donned their lifejackets and so now the raft is drifting closer and closer to the waterfall. How many more will don their lifejackets before the tipping point is met, the raft plunges into peril and takes those who chose to remain on board with it into the precipice.

At what point does Johnson get embarrassed by his 'leadership'. Now that many of his closest allies have deserted him, surely his authority is finally at a point that he can no longer cling on? You can no longer govern when your government is in chaos, and these economically troubling times need strong leadership and clear decision-making. This cannot happen with Johnson remaining at the helm.

Although this might look like a stand for morality by Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid, it does rather conveniently leave them off the hook in sorting out the cost of living and health system messes they have found themselves in. And once this latest Boris-crisis has blown over, they are perfectly poised to run for the top job. Or am I just being cynical?

I have mixed thoughts here. First thought is thank goodness someone from the Conservative party seems to have some morals. Second thought - if those with a modicum of morality leave - what on earth do we have left? Things need to change NOW! Leaders: please step up and get in place.

Both of them have aided and abetted Johnson's previous lies and bluster. They arenot doing this out of any sense of decency, but to jockey for position to be the next PM. I can but hope that Johnson is finally booted out of Parliament for good, but no doubt he'll prove a useful scapegoat to keep around in the short term.

Enough. Along with many other cabinet members, we have now lost one of the best Chancellors we have ever had. And once again due to Boris standing up for one of his sexually harassing buddies. What more will it take to get him out - the country is in complete disarray. Rishi knows that Boris is totally irresponsible with regards to the economy and cannot continue papering over the cracks. Forget the vote of no confidence, just accept that no one has confidence in him so get him out now.

'What took them so long?' was my first thought. Senior figures seem to have been having more and more trouble defending Boris, as more and more stories break. It was inevitable that senior figures would, at some point, have to distance themselves, or risk having their own careers forever tarnished, I'm just surprised at how long it has taken some of them to realise it and act.

We can only guess what’s going on below the surface within the government. But above the surface, the Chancellor has the biggest responsibility towards the country especially when cost of living and inflation are sky-rocketing and our people’s livelihoods are at stake. Our country may be facing one of the worst financial crisis and the Chancellor resigns over a row with the PM?! Should he not be asking himself a simple question - is my greater responsibility towards my country or towards the PM? Shouldn’t the former outweigh the latter 100 percent?
