Do you feel threatened by ChatGPT?

ended 24. January 2023

ChatGPT is the talk of the town today after Microsoft was alleged to have stuck another $10bn into its parent company, OpenAI (note, the exact amount has not been officially confirmed by Microsoft). Some are already saying this could be the beginning of the end for certain sectors and that content and creative marketing agencies (as well as journalists) could be particularly exposed. What are your thoughts? Load of old nonsense or a genuine threat to content creators and marketers?

I'm not frightened by ChatGPT. While AI can do a good impression of a human, it’s just that, an impression.

Loads of people tell you to use it to create content for your website, social media posts, letters to your mother, etc but they are just the usual corner cutters and get-rich-quick merchants.

The tool learns from the information it's been fed. Meaning it's essentially using someone else's work to give you your answer, maybe even yours!

Customers reading AI copy will soon begin to spot it all sounds very similar and if that's what you want for your customers, fill your boots.

Great writing comes from original thought, which is something AI has quite cracked yet.

I asked ChatGPT to write this response for me but it was too busy, so I certainly don't feel threatened by it or see it replacing me just yet. As a digital marketing consultant and coach, I think ChatGPT has the potential to save marketers a lot of time by acting as a non-human research assistant. However, the content it produces still requires a human editor to inject some personality into it and fact-check the output.

ChatGPT and the wide spin-off of tools using this technology need to be seen as an opportunity for those in the content and marketing industries. In fact, several high-profile publishers such as Bankrate and CNET are using the technology to help create some articles on their sites, whilst being fully transparent about it. However, ChatGPT will not end the content creation industry. The tech is unable to produce a completely trustworthy finished article - if you use it without any editorial process then be wary. Instead, content writers will be able to evolve into a more editorial role, structuring articles, and ensuring consistency in tone and accuracy of information. It may help speed up what they are able to produce, but they will need to learn the new technology and understand its advantages and flaws.

Quality content that matters comes from the heart and resonates with people for a reason. It is born from experience and oozes authenticity. Automation may well replace many repetitive types of content production. The content that is for content's sake. It may be that AI can inspire topics. However, there will always be a place for quality content from real people with real experiences.

ChatGPT is almost certain to revolutionise many industries. And it's far too late to put the genie back in the bottle. Creative sectors, in particular, will see the biggest change. It's crucial that those sectors embrace the technology to become as efficient as possible, rather than fight against it. Remember that PCs and spreadsheets replaced thousands of ledger clerks, however, today's accountants are as busy as ever but much more efficient. And that efficiency will benefit us all.

I'm more afraid of my toaster and my utility bills than of ChatGPT. We should embrace it in all of its glory to assist us with content creation, marketing and business in general. Artificial intelligence is here to stay, and we should evolve with it until Skynet come online.

No business owner should feel threatened by new technology but learn to embrace and adapt to it. ChatGPT is generating lots of noise but closed down to new users fairly quickly, suggesting the results weren’t too good.

When AI does develop into a more mainstream, usable format, business owners a will harness the benefits and streamline their practices saving them money. No one is to fear automation apart from the lazy.

The use of AI systems have been around for many years, this does seem to be a huge leap forward and millions are clambering to find the best uses. In financial services, I can see the use of ChatGPT in the short term could be to help build client reports and some marketing activities, i don't think they can replace human decision making just yet. Online Mortgage Brokers were the big way forward a few years ago, and now everyone acknowledges that a hybrid model of adviser and tech is probably the best solution. Humans still trust humans to make the right decisions, but tthere will come a time when AI will be more prolific in our finances.

Anyone choosing to show their content writers, SEOs and marketers the door by replacing them with ChatGPT won't get far with this money-saving strategy for very long. As a research tool, it has great potential, but we need to not forget that all intelligence for this content production is derived from what humans have published in the first place. AI can't provide its own source material. Image and video AI tools are emerging too that could provide a new twist on the creative process, but for now, humans still need to remain in charge.

It's not the beginning of the end for certain sectors; it's just a new beginning, where the people within the sector who adopt it, learn it and shape it will find themselves in a beneficial position of using it as a tool to create efficiencies in lower end tasks while bringing their human skills at the most valuable end.

I like to think of ChatGPT as a hammer. It's a tool. Learn to use it in the right places with the right amount of force, and you're good. Ignore it and spend all day trying to get that nail in; use it for everything, and you will make a mess.

I run a human translation agency and machine translation has always been there but never been a threat. You have to embrace AI in the best possible way depending on your specific industry. People who are constantly nagging about AI and most recently ChatGPT have no idea what they are talking about. If you are a marketer, content creator or social media person and know how to leverage it (if not, learn how to or you are losing out) you will not miss this 'passing trend'. ChatGPT feeds itself millions of words and information each day so you have to grasp it and use it to your advantage to make it work for your business. Being scared of new tech and running away from it will put you at a huge disadvantage to your competitors. Instead, research and test new ways you can use it to help your customers.

It should be no surprise to anyone that AI will revolutionise jobs in the marketing and creative fields. I was already told 15 years ago as a design student that our jobs would be replaced by AI one day. So, this is nothing new.

Whether your job survives this change will depend on how well you adapt to the new technology. Are you willing to adapt to new technology by learning it or will you try to rebel against it until you're replaced for good?

Both I and my agency have used multiple AI tools for as long as they have existed. AI even helps us manage our schedules and project management needs. AI has saved us a lot of time, but for now, AI cannot replace human empathy or the ability to understand psychological & strategic aspects that are an essential part of marketing.

We have therefore chosen to adapt.

AI can assist content creators and marketers by automating specific tasks and making them more efficient. This can open up new opportunities for them to serve more clients and increase productivity. It is not a threat but rather an opportunity for these industries to improve and adapt.

Naturally, when new tech is developed there is some fear amongst groups on how it will impact the need for their job. However in reality it creates a huge opportunity for firms that can adapt to the changes in their industry. What it does offer is a creative spark for an individual who may be lacking ideas, but it can't be purely relied upon as will lack that personal tone. Ai won't replace digital marketing (yet) but the person who uses it to their advantage will replace the ones that don't.

I love GPT, it helps me to organise my mind and get clearer ads that speak to my people. Its easier and simpler to ask AI for suggestions and then mould them to be more me.

Only two things are certain about ChatGPT; for some businesses, industries and people it’s a massive opportunity for others an existential threat.

All other questions remain unanswered.

As Microsoft sinks another $10 billion into the platform, they need to make a return. There’s no way ChatGPT will remain free. So how much will they charge for access to the system?

Secondly, how will Google react? ChatGPT will exponentially increase the amount of content being produced, that has huge implications for search and SEO.

Thirdly, ChatGPT means those who have no writing ability can now easily produce content, but will they have the skills to promote it? The world is about to get deluged by huge amounts of AI generated content, it’s the marketers who have promotional skills who’ll win.

As a content creator you'd think that I might be at risk of being put out of a job due to chatgpt. That machine has had more days off in the past week than I have had in a lifetime. "Computer says no" is not going to come back into fashion. At it's current state with it being at "capacity" it's not going to catch on. People need human connection and reliability. I trust myself more than I do a bot. Even when it does work and I am able to finally log in and search for something, it's generic and not specific enough. When you KNOW what you want to say and how you want to express it, no bot can help with this. If you're stuck on writing a couple of lines and need a boost of inspiration then this is the kind of technology that could help. In my opinion it is to be embraced and used in conjunction with human skill NOT to replace it.

Having used ChatGPT over the past couple of weeks, I know it is a game changer. ChatGPT can help save time and effort in creating written marketing content and can also help improve the quality and effectiveness of that content. That means you have time for more clients. It's an incredibly powerful tool which has so much potential. Everything has positives and negatives; it all depends on how content creators, marketers and businesses use ChatGPT.

The huge difference between content creators and AI is that people connect with people. It’s subtle cues and personality that a machine will never be able to replicate. I personally don’t feel threatened by it. I will always have a brand voice and personality a robot will be unable to replicate. People can tell the difference and my prediction is that interaction will continue to be higher when a piece of content will have been written by a person.

Not threatened. People come to us for the personal approach and I think that will continue! I do feel concerned for those freelance creative writers and content providers, they are going to take a real hit with this and I hope they can diversify or at least, make their offering shine brighter.

AI is great; but remember we are human beings and keeping the human connection is essential. USE AI for some work but don't forget we are communicating with humans. More and more companies are forgetting that!
