Google tests new AI search design that will make small businesses "invisible": "SMEs need to wake up"
GOOGLE has tests a new AI search design that experts claim will make small businesses “invisible” as they warn: "SMEs need to wake up."
Google just tested merging AI Overviews with conversational AI mode. The "dive deeper in AI Mode" button turns every query into a potential rabbit hole.
Users get quick AI summaries, then fall into extended Gemini conversations that can answer follow-up questions without clicking through to real websites.
It's left small business owners asking: what exactly are we paying SEO for?
Colette Mason, Author & AI Consultant at London-based Clever Clogs AI commented:
"Small businesses built their digital presence on the promise that good content would be found and valued. Now that same content trains the systems that make them invisible. Meanwhile, Google tests ads within AI results, creating a premium lane for visibility that most SMEs can't afford. Can businesses adapt by creating AI-proof value or simply watch their hard-earned expertise get commoditised into Gemini "chatbot" responses?"
Kate Underwood, Founder & Chief People Strategist at Southampton-based Kate Underwood HR and Training commented:
"If Google can grab your content, answer your customer’s question and never show them your site, that is not search, that is theft with better branding. People are already bored of bland AI answers. It all sounds the same and no one knows who is behind it, yet it sits at the top while real businesses get shoved further down. This is not the end of search, but it is a wake up call. For small businesses the goal now is simple. Once someone finds you, keep them. Build your own channels email, community, podcast so you own the relationship, not Google."
Rohit Parmar-Mistry, Founder at Burton-on-Trent-based Pattrn Data commented:
"Let’s call this what it is: Google is burning the bridge that built it. For twenty years, the internet’s social contract was simple, we provide the answers, Google provides the traffic. With 'AI Mode', they’re scraping our expertise to build a walled garden where the creator gets nothing but a server bill. It’s the ultimate automation arrogance. They’re replacing genuine human insight with algorithmic summaries that strip away the nuance, context, and accountability of a real business. When Gemini gives bad advice, who gets sued? Not Google. SMEs need to wake up. Stop chasing SEO algorithms that are actively trying to hide you. The only defence against an AI that steals your content is building a brand people actually want to talk to directly. If you’re relying on Google to be your shop window, you’re about to find the curtains pulled shut permanently."
Patricia McGirr, Founder at Burnley-based Repossession Rescue Network commented:
"Google has hijacked your customers and you’ve zero control over it. AI mode now answers their questions, keeps them inside Google’s bubble and leaves your website as little more than filler. Years of SEO and content investment risk being pushed aside by a system that no longer needs to send anyone to you to profit from what you know. Customers are still searching for answers. The real question is whether Google will let them find you. We could find SEO edging towards Betamax status. Technically sound but sidelined. AI is positioning itself as the VHS of discovery. Not better. Just dominant. And dominance decides who stays visible, relevant and profitable."
