Accenture’s latest move isn’t just a partnership; it’s a warning shot for every CIO who cares about the long-term health of their infrastructure. The consultancy giant is training 30,000 staff on Anthropic’s Claude, effectively arming an army of junior consultants with code generators they may not fully understand.

This is the industrialisation of technical debt. We are seeing a shift where consultancies, historically reliant on billing for bodies, are now pivoting to billing for "AI-augmented" speed. But here is the reality I’ve seen on the ground: when you give a junior developer a tool that writes code faster than they can comprehend it, you aren't building efficiency. You are building a future revenue stream for the consultancy that will have to come back and fix the mess.

The promise that AI tools allow juniors to write "senior-level code" is a dangerous myth. Senior code isn't just about syntax; it's about architecture, maintainability, and understanding failure states. Generative AI is brilliant at the 'happy path' but terrible at the nuance that keeps systems stable in the real world.

Consultancies have stumbled upon a terrifyingly perfect business model. First, they bill clients to unleash a swarm of juniors generating code faster than they can comprehend it. Then, when that brittle, AI-generated spaghetti code inevitably breaks in production, they’ll secure the lucrative contract to clean up the mess. It’s a perpetual motion machine of billable hours.

True seniority comes from the ‘scar tissue’ of debugging failures, not the ‘happy path’ of a chatbot. If your consultants rely on Claude to think for them, you aren't paying for architects; you’re paying for passengers on a ship destined to sink.

Clients need to ask themselves: are you paying for a solution, or are you just financing the sequel where your infrastructure collapses?

You are also breeding a generation of consultants who can prompt but cannot properly think a problem through. No graft, no scar tissue, no real architects. Take out real human judgment, and you do not just break systems, you break careers and cultures. In a few years’ time, leaders will ask why nobody spotted the risks earlier, forgetting they outsourced the thinking to a tool and to juniors who were never allowed to learn the hard way.

Accenture is playing with fire, and handing the matches to juniors. AI hype has been sold like a miracle cure, and now consultancies are flooding clients with code written faster than anyone can understand. It’s like letting trainee pilots fly a jet because the plane comes with autopilot.

I love playing with low-code and 'vibe coding' tools. They're fantastic for taking an idea to prototype at warp speed. But I would never deploy anything into a client’s business without senior engineers checking every line. Yet one of the world’s biggest consultancies is comfortable doing exactly that. Why? Because they can’t lose. Build fast today, bill again when it breaks tomorrow.

The real casualties will be the businesses left with unstable systems and no accountability. AI is still labelled ‘experimental’ which is essentially a way for these firms to shirk liability. It’s a perfect storm, and businesses will be the ones standing in the rain.

The consultancy will point to client sign-off. The client will point to the supplier's expertise and duty of care. Meanwhile, the actual damage: lost profit, compromised data, broken customer trust, lands on both businesses.

Tools don't create good quality system architects. Human daily struggle does. If this "senior-level code" came from a junior with a coding copilot, when it breaks, nobody knows how to fix it safely. Fast AI-generated code looks brilliant in demos. In production, it's a liability minefield. No comments explaining why. No consideration of edge cases. No coherence. Just plausible syntax that compounds into chaos.

Clients could be paying Accenture prices for what amounts to expensive copy-paste (hopefully) with a human rubber stamp. If the next generation never struggles through the tech basics, they'll be prompt engineers managing black boxes they can't fix when the problems circle.
