What trade sites do you tend to read?

ended 18. January 2023

Brokers, a wee bit of market intel for us so would appreciate a response if you can spare 2 mins.

  • Which mortgage trade media do you tend to read and prefer? Mortgage Strategy, Mortgage Solutions, Financial Reporter, Mortgage Introducer, FTAdviser or Money Marketing? Or any others I may have missed?
  • Do you feel these media give you the content you want to read? Any other thoughts on them?
  • Would you be interested in a broker-specific news website powered, in part, by Newspage and brokers (in the lo-fi, semi-anarchical tone we have)? Or something where we gave you the news you need? It's easy enough.

I don't actively visit the websites you mentioned, but I do get their e-mail updates and click on articles that interest me. The issue is that as inbound e-mail traffic grows, their communications may not always be opened. The delivery of Newspage is distinctive, but is the solution another standalone website? I'm not certain. I believe it would be beneficial if information alerts were delivered in a different manner. For instance, a Whatsapp group forum that directs you to an article or link rather than getting lost in the noise. Alternatively, the news service could be integrated into the Newspage login process. As a result, we now have a one-stop shop where we can view broker-specific news and respond.

Realistically I only lean on any of the above sites when it's time to up the hours of learning to hit our annual CPD threshold. I personally think they are all doing the same thing over and over again as run out of ideas about what to write about. Also, everything out there currently has too much of a corporate feel so there is certainly space to be doing something different to bring the industry into the 21st century.

I would say your list and one called 'The Intermediary'. I sense some are the same but just in different disguises.

Much of the trade media really isn't designed for the consumer. Its easy for us to mention mortgage rates and deals just launched, but in a consumer regulatory way those deals need to be presented in a compliant way, and this press doesn't;t do that. Its good for the brokers, but I guess we are on Newspage to also appeal to the consumer market, so a clearer route to that market would be ideal (tough I know).

I think any idea of a website should be consumer focused, no good for the broker-to-broker market. I think you just need to check on the compliant nature of our world first.

What I would like to do is take the feed of my articles from my newspage & publish them on my own website - is that possible??

FT Adviser
Mortgage Strategy
Mortgage Solutions
Protection Guru

The above sites are ok, though I like the idea of a broker site with a bit more personality and less formal tone.

I read financial reporter daily and sometimes dip into mortgage solutions I also read a lot from protection guru. I find the updates about rates etc to be pointless as we get that direct from lenders but commentary pieces on what is happening in the wider economy, with house prices etc is useful to guide my advice and keep up with current affairs. A broker led publication could have its merits as it may provide insights to things the mainstream media don’t talk about like the Paul Lewis comments!
