What Happens When AI Removes Your Mental Wellbeing Recovery Time Along With Your Grunt Work

Here's the efficiency paradox nobody wants to admit: when AI removes the boring tasks from knowledge work, it doesn't just eliminate ‘drudgery’. It eliminates the cognitive recovery periods that protect mental wellbeing under sustained pressure.

At DTX/UCX Expo London ExCeL on 1st October 2025, organisational psychologist Danny Wareham and contact centre consultant Nerys Corfield delivered findings that expose a pattern with troubling implications for any role that blends routine administrative tasks with complex, emotionally demanding duties. The brutal discovery: embedding AI auto-summarisation tools into call centre workflows eliminates 75-85% of documentation time, but didn't create sustainable productivity increases. Instead, they create a mental health and human resources crisis hiding behind impressive efficiency metrics.

The pattern is devastatingly simple.

Organisations deploy AI to handle the "easy stuff": automated note-taking, data entry, summarisation, and so on. Employee efficiency per hour soars. Leadership celebrates the recovered time.

However, what often follows is a managerial tendency to immediately fill that time with more of the psychologically demanding work. Wareham and Corfield's presentation indicated advisors who previously handled 35 calls daily with 12-15 minutes of recovery between emotionally charged interactions now face 50+ consecutive calls of ‘pure customer distresswith zero respite. 

The broader industry picture is stark. ClearSource reported 74% of contact centre agents are at risk of burnout, with turnover hitting 30-45%.

What these findings reveal is profoundly uncomfortable: those "boring" tasks desk-based workers long to be free from aren't just filler. They are mental recovery periods disguised as work. Twelve minutes of straightforward documentation after managing a difficult task isn't wasted time. It's critical decompression that prevents emotional exhaustion from compounding. Remove it, and managers don't get 12 more minutes of brilliant service. They get someone operating in continuous activationmode  with no psychological safety valve.

This is not just a workplace problem. As Wareham noted in the session, "We rent our employees from their families. We have a duty of care to return them in a better condition." Yet current AI implementation strategies do precisely the opposite for junior office workers, extracting maximum output whilst removing the natural pauses that make continuous emotional labour survivable.

The fundamental error is assuming mental capacity is infinitely elastic. This isn't about resisting technology. It's about recognising that human beings need recovery built into our workflows, not optimised out of them. Otherwise AI has the power to destroy the cognitive gains from applying fresh brains supposed to innovate and improve wider aspects of personal and departmental performance.

The critical question isn't "how much time does this AI enhancement save?" It's "what happens to the brains in your department?"

Here's the practical test: Shadow two teams for a full day—one using AI workflows, one not. Measure not just throughput, but decision quality and business outcomes: customers retained, error rates, whatever matters operationally.

Ask workers to self-report their mental state, mood, and perceived effectiveness hourly using a simple 1-10 scale added to a spreadsheet. Fast, easy, accurate live data for spotting trends. If the AI-enhanced workflow shows declining performance or rising fatigue and frustration across the shift, you haven't improved the system—you've created a burnout assembly line.

Humans must remain in control, with the ability to pause, override, or inject recovery time when needed. Technology that removes human agency over pacing isn't augmentation. It's extraction, and eventually, it destroys what you're trying to optimise.

Savvy workers warned that AI would increase stress, strip recovery time, and fuel burnout, but were told to “get with the times.” The truth? AI is not a problem solver, it's a magnifier. Where efficiency is king and wellbeing is ignored, AI becomes a weapon of burnout. The answer isn’t resisting AI. It’s moving from extractive to regenerative business models, like those championed by B Corp and the Organisation of Responsible Businesses. Join these organisations and ape these savvy businesses. Otherwise, AI won’t just automate tasks, it will automate collapse.

AI is lauded as the costs and time-saving saviour we all need in the drive for ever more efficiencies, but is a ticking time bomb unless used with caution. Studies have shown that overusers of AI agents lose critical thinking skills; just like the mental decompression that 'busywork' brings, critical thinking is done in the times spent pondering. There's nothing more frustrating than interacting with AI chatbot helpdesks, most especially if the issue you need to discuss is not in their knowledge bases. So why do we want to impose these on our customers? AI tools like ChatGPT will never tell you they don't know the answer to your question, but will press on giving you answers with 100% confidence. If you have no mastery of the subject, you end up 'producing work' that is, objectively, a load of nonsense. This work then gets published to the internet and reinforces 'fact', which is then cited as fact by others in their own 'work'. It's a spiral that'll implode eventually.

Mental health is not an efficiency metric. It is a duty of care. Too many businesses are using AI to strip away the so-called boring tasks without realising they are eroding the recovery time that keeps people resilient. What looks like progress on a balance sheet rarely takes account of the human cost in practice. AI can and should support staff, but only if wellbeing is measured alongside output and recovery is protected as fiercely as productivity. If leaders ignore this, they are not embracing innovation, they are engineering burnout and business decline.
