Upskilling and qualifications in specialist finance

Journalist: Hannah Smith, Freelance

ended 09. June 2023

Looking to speak to brokers or lenders who are upskilling themselves or their teams with education or qualifications related to specialist finance.

This article will be pegged to the launch of the Certified Practitioner in Specialist Property (CPSP) qualification and will ask why now is the right time for brokers to be broadening their remit and focusing outside of mainstream products, and how  officially recognised qualifications can help. What effects will a growth in awareness/understanding have on the specialist market, in turn?

It's for The Intermediary's digital magazine. Thanks!

We have 3 people in our firm studying this right now! I think it’s a fantastic short course which can provide skills within specialist finance that is speeding up our teams progression into advising. Happy to give more info for the piece!

Something we are considering as a business as we look to expand our client offering and ensuring we are top of our game

The new CPSP exam, which I'm taking, is very welcome news, as we want to expand our range of services, and there's little to no formal training in this segment of the market, And as all our clients are self-employed, offering bridging, commercial and development finance fits naturally with our customer profile.

I expect this exam to lead to a lot of new brokers to start advising in the specialist finance area, introducing healthy competition, and potentially lowering fees.

Commercial and non-regulated brokers should be controlled and regulated in our opinion as this forms a large position of risk, usually with higher loan sizes and unusual business strategies. The best way to demonstrate the skill set and level of knowledge is with certified qualification, which should be underpinned by the likes of Cemap which outlines the regulated lending space.

We would be happy to have our team carry out additional qualifications as all knowledge is great knowledge. The better skilled our team and industry are, the better the advice and education passed on to the client. Win-win for all parties.
