Transactions impacted by closure of solicitors?

The Solicitors Regulation Authority has confirmed it is looking into the closure of Butterworths Solicitors, which has four branches in Carlisle, Penrith, Kendal and Hensingham.

A sign appeared on the door of the Lowther Street branch in Carlisle on Monday 2 February saying it can no longer trade.

You'd like to think impacted customers have been notified but short notice closures like this is not good, not just for the customers, the firm and staff and wider relationships. In most situations, another firm will take over the files but this isn't always a 5 minute quick fix. This can cause many a problem for impending court dates and the potential for failed property completions.

As a Carlisle based mortgage brokerage unfortunately we have had a couple of clients impacted by the closure of Butterworths. This is causing no end of anxiety. Butterworths have been a long established, large local firm that have thousands of clients locally due to their history, scale and location on a prominent location with Carlisle city Centre. Luckily there are some amazing local firms who will take these clients on, but undoubtedly this sudden change in solicitors, particularly for house purchases, will cause lots of strain on chains. My clients are just hoping any delays does not cause their chains to collapse.
