The comparison isn't just staggering, it's revealing. Apollo had clear accountability. NASA reported to Congress. Budgets were scrutinised. Success meant humans walking on another world, broadcast live to millions. Failure would have been impossible to hide. The public could see where every billion went because there was a destination, a timeline, and people willing to stand behind the decisions.

Today's AI spending has none of that clarity. Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, and Alphabet are pouring shareholders' money into data centres and chips with the fervour of a 1960s space race, except no one can articulate what victory looks like beyond "staying ahead of the competition." There's no finish line. No defined mission success. Just an ever-escalating arms race where spending more than your rival becomes the strategy itself, regardless of whether the investment generates returns anyone can measure.

Here's what should make investors, and the rest of us, nervous. Free cash flow at these companies is plummeting. Meta's projected to see an almost 90% drop in 2026. Alphabet's heading the same direction. Amazon's market value dropped £124 billion in a single day after announcing its spending plans. These aren't signs of confident investment in a clear opportunity. They're signs of companies terrified to blink first in case they wake up irrelevant.

If you'd spent this much public money and couldn't show what you'd built, you'd face a reckoning.

The Apollo programme cost lives, risked political careers, and demanded Congressional testimony when things went wrong. Today's AI spending spree risks shareholders' money and workers' livelihoods with no equivalent accountability structure. When Meta burns through 90% of its free cash flow chasing an undefined finish line, who answers for the workers displaced by automation that never quite delivers, or the small businesses restructured around AI promises that may evaporate next quarter? Apollo had a destination. AI spend has a direction: "more", which isn't strategy.

No lone company can stop spending without looking weak to investors, which means we've engineered a prisoner's dilemma where rational individual behaviour produces collectively irrational outcomes. Someone's going to eat the loss when this recalibrates. History suggests it won't be the executives who approved the spend.

Then comes the cheeky bit. The same firms selling the tools will tell you AI will make you more productive, even when the output is hit and miss. So you’re paying more, taking more risk, and getting told to work faster.
If the UK Government is chucking money at “AI growth” but not backing the small businesses who actually employ Britain, that’s a problem. Because you can’t build a future economy on hype if the real economy is knackered.
