Does there need to be a rethink around risk?
Free PR platform, Newspage, asked brokers and others in the property industry if there needs to be a rethink in the mortgage industry around risk when it comes to the employed versus the self-employed. One broker says “PAYE should be seen as riskier than self-employment”, while another remarks that “I am sure there have been instances where an employee of a company can obtain a mortgage easier than the owner, due to self-employed lending criteria. That's the absurdity of lending today.” A third says "it suits the industry to maintain the status quo. Why? Because by artificially making these clients more "risky", lenders have an excuse to charge higher interest rates." The responses of 14 brokers and property industry experts are below.
