Office working in 2024 and perks

ended 13. December 2023

A journalist at the Mail Online is writing a piece on Gen-Z's apparent enthusiasm for working among colleagues in the office rather than sitting on a laptop in their bedrooms. Does this tally with what you're seeing? Also, the piece will be covering workplace gimmicks following new research about what staff like and don't. For example, office pool tables, free after-work drinks and free massages and exercise classes are no longer valued, while private healthcare, additional pension contributions, flexible working, enhanced maternity/paternity pay and mental health support are. So two Qs:

  • Will 2024 become the year of the office, especially among Gen Z
  • What perks do you find Gen Z want the most and dislike the most?

Here at the Find Your Flex Group, we work to outcomes and my Gen Z'ers love it. They value the fact that we work to 'outcomes' versus time or location-based contracts above all else. They like to move around, travel and take work with them without time constraints on when they achieve their outcomes, as long as it's done by the time agreed. This means they get to manufacture their own work-life balance. We don't have gimmicks, we show trust and are rewarded for that by our highly engaged and productive GenZ team.

What most employees value is good company culture; and an environment where you feel valued and listened to. If that's right, workers want to be in the office, in a sociable, friendly space. The gimmicks become unimportant, and the valuable benefits become real magnets.

We are a micro business employing a team of 9 HR and Training Consultants; we have upped the ante with our benefits offer and now provide private healthcare for everyone, which includes 24/7 GP appointments, mental health support, physiotherapy, private hospital treatment and menopause support.

As well as giving access to medical treatment, the healthcare scheme incentivises my team to keep fit with partially funded Apple Watches, half-price gym membership and treats such as monthly cinema tickets.

We also provide CostCo membership for cheap fuel, free parking, team members can bring their pets to the office, and onsite showers to encourage biking to work.

As an employer, I sometimes feel I must plug the yawning gap left by an underfunded NHS, as it takes so long for my team to get a GP appointment or be referred for treatment.
