Metro - Eleanor Noyce

Hi, I'm looking to chat to a work/careers expert about the impact that 'unhappiness leave' could have on a workplace.

If you're interested in speaking to me, can you let me know in this thread.

Hi Eleanor,

I’d be happy (!) to discuss this concept of 'unhappiness leave' from China and its potential impacts on the workplace. As an expert on productivity and the future of work, I've explored various approaches that enhance employee wellbeing and productivity. Implementing 'unhappiness leave' could be an important step in acknowledging the crucial role of mental and emotional health at work. It raises interesting questions about the balance between employee wellbeing and operational efficiency, and how such policies could be effectively implemented without abuse. It could also be seen as a critique of current work cultures that prioritise long hours and being ‘always-on’.

We see this from an employment law perspective but also as a business that is built around flexible working.
Unhappy workers will take "sick leave" there are numerous reports that support this. If this is not addressed we see how the odd "sick day" can turn into prolonged absences due to mental health issues. So "unhapiness leave" could certainly have a place. Instead of pretending there are no issues it allows early identification of problems and hence early solutions.
Is there scope for abuse? Of course there is, but no more or less than exisitng sickness entitlements with most businesses. It also allows for more honest reporting by employees and transparent employee/management relations ultimately lead to happier, more productive staff.

Hi Eleanor, I'd love to chat about unhappiness leave.

Mental health at work has always been an important, but taboo subject. As we come to a collective realisation that it impacts everyone, albeit at different times in life, we need to prioritise the well being of our workforce if we are to improve or even maintain productivity and performance.
