Major sports tournaments and your business or charity

ended 10. July 2024

Ahead of England’s game tonight, we’re keen to find out whether countries doing well in sport and the improved sentiment that goes with it translates into increased demand for whatever it is you do, whether you work in property (do people get more bullish about buying?), retail (do people spend more with you?), financial services (maybe people’s risk appetite changes?), law and HR (drunken shenanigans at work-based sporting events?), or the third sector (do people donate more when the feel good-factor is upon them)? Does sporting achievement put a spring in people’s step and benefit your business or does it see demand drop off as the country in question is glued to the telly and back pages of the papers? Any interesting and fun anecdotes you may have, let us know. This is tabloid fodder so don’t take it too seriously and feel free to litter your responses with sporting, and ideally football, metaphors. We’ll be issuing your responses to the media at 11am so deadline is fairly tight.

Mindset and positivity give us the confidence to make decisions based not always on the financials, but the mood. Which may or may not be a good thing. We see this with property: if your home is increasing in value, it makes you feel positive, and you buy goods and services. If your home value is falling, then homeowners tend to stop spending. A big win for England has the potential to put many people in a more positive frame of mind and to be more productive, but beware spending money you don't have. For the property market this may well encourage more buyers to surface, and feel more inclined to borrow too. What happens on the pitch in major sporting tournaments like Euro 2024 can feed into the property market.

Stuff the business levels, it's coming home.
It took a customer all of 43 seconds to text me to rearrange our appointment tonight, its to be expected. Unless you run a pub, business levels will grind to a holt around big games and there is nothing you can do about it. If you cant beat them, join them.
With the cost of living crisis rumbling, the economic uncertainty and the shocking weather this summer, people need some fun and excitement. After a big win tonight, and then Sunday business will return to normal. There will be a spring in peoples step, Bank of England will hopefully drop the base rate and the property industry will be in full swing by the end of the year. Hopefully.

The feel good factor of Gareth’s boys making the semi finals was a welcome relief from the uptight nerves we’ve had to put up with on the faces of Rishi and Keir for the last 2 months. With Keir Starmer lifting the Westminster Trophy high above his head, its time for the new government to show off the win by changing the nations finances for the better. The nations joy of winning at penalties will be mirrored soon I’m sure with a base rate cut in the next 2 or 3 months, then we will all feel like winners. Come on England.
