Google to kill search as you know it for "AI-powered interactive experiences"

ended 20. May 2026

Google announced at I/O 2026 that search will replace ranked links with AI-generated interactive experiences, built live by Gemini 3.5 Flash. Users get mini apps, background "information agents," and generative interfaces instead of websites to click through to. AI Overviews already reach 2.5 billion monthly users. Google's conversational AI Mode tops 1 billion.

  • New search box arriving this week (w/c 19 May 2026)
  • Generative UI (custom layouts, interactive visuals, simulations)  this summer

UK publishers are already bleeding. Tank research tracking 800 companies found UK website traffic growth collapsed 86% since Google's AI search rollout. DMG Media told the CMA click-through rates dropped 89% when AI Overviews appeared above their content.

None of this is cheap. Google claims a 33x cut in AI query energy, but that figure covers basic text prompts, not always-on agents or generative UI built on the fly. Microsoft research found multi-step reasoning pushes energy 13x higher per query.

We'd like your views:

  • AI Overviews already cut UK publisher click-throughs by up to 89%. With generative UI and information agents replacing links this summer, is ad-funded digital publishing in the UK now structurally broken?
  • Google says building a publisher opt-out is a “huge engineering project”, yet spent billions building the AI that created the problem. Explanation or excuse?
  • If Google stops sending people to websites, what happens to every business built on that traffic?
  • If background agents scrape the web 24/7 and deliver synthesised updates without a single click, who funds the work those agents are harvesting?

Google built its name on good quality search. Now it's replacing that with AI that keeps people inside its own ecosystem.

Google promised the world's information at your fingertips now it's promising to chew that information for you and never let you touch the source. The people and businesses that created the content Google trained on don't get a click or a referral. They get scraped.

And nobody's talking about the energy bill.

Google claims a 33x efficiency gain on AI queries, but that's for a simple text prompt. Always-on background agents and generative interfaces built from scratch for every question are a different animal.

Microsoft's research shows that kind of multi-step AI reasoning burns 13x more energy per query. The most-used search engine on earth just made every search vastly more expensive to run in every way imaginable.

Get the user experience wrong with this radical change and they are going to anger billions of people let alone businesses who paid for SEO.

Google is not just changing search. It is rewriting the economics of the web while still relying on the web to feed its AI systems. For two decades, publishers, retailers and independent websites accepted the trade-off: create content, appear in search, receive traffic. Generative search weakens that exchange. If AI agents answer the query, build the interface and keep users inside Google, the publisher carries the production cost while the platform captures more of the value. Thousands of businesses are built on discovery through search, from comparison sites to SMEs. Remove the click-through economy and the question becomes simple: who funds the information ecosystem once traffic stops flowing?
