The Big Match - England vs Wales

A journalist on the Daily Mail want to know what businesses are doing for staff so they can watch the big match….? 

Even though the match doesn't kick off until 7pm, are you shutting early, letting staff have the day/afternoon off? Maybe you're having a party in the office? We want to hear your plans!!

We're supporting our team by offering them either time off or time in lieu if they're not a football fan. As a thankyou to our team members for their hard work, we are also offering an allowance, which will be paid in their monthly pay, of £25 per match to use on food or drinks.

If someone wants to slip off early to get a few beers in before the match, we certainly won't hold it against them. This is one of the biggest sporting events in this country for some time so you'd think most employers would get into the spirit of things. Equally, we'll be bringing in some paracetamol tomorrow as there may well be a few sore heads. I suppose we’re lucky that, as a tech business, we are super flexible about working hours anyway. People are managed by results, and we trust them to manage their own time accordingly, whether that’s watch the football or take their son/daughter to the doctor. They don't even need to ask.

Having worked in the past for companies where I've either missed games or had to take holiday days to watch England in major tournaments, it only ever made me feel frustrated with the company. I have a firm belief that keeping staff happy, motivated and appreciated is massive in creating a place where people want to work. So we will go out of our way to ensure that our staff has the option to watch the England games. We have already as a team watched the England v Iran game in the office and unfortunately being superstitious, maybe I need to get the team to stay in the office for the Wales game after watching the USA game at home! It is every 4 years, let's unite and cheer on our country, after all, it has been 56 years.

As a director, I never expect my team to do anything I wouldn't do. You won't catch me working through an England match during a World Cup, so I don't expect my staff to. Tonight is easy as everyone can make it home in time even if it means knocking off half hour early to make sure. If the game is part way through the day, everyone is expected to pull together and put that extra effort in throughout then day. Most in turn will start a little earlier and take a shorter lunch break as recognition.

The World Cup is a festival of fun. We had the consensus that the team were keen to follow it but it’s a very important time in the mortgage market. Therefore, we’ve fully stocked the bar in the office and had a projector fitted so the games are on throughout the way. A win-win for everyone.

We are letting our team leave at 3pm so they can get home and sorted ready for the buildup and kick off! We are all football fans in our team and it means a lot to us all, plus we all have families we want to get home to to watch it with so this early finish feels like a nice gesture that won't negatively impact our customers or orders.

My staff all work from home, I trust them to get the work done, so if they wanted to knock off and watch the footie, I would be disappointed if they don't. Holding people back from their hobbies and loves is a sure fire way of beginning the disgruntled employee trend. Life is more than work.

We're fairly relaxed when it comes to sporting events and understand that our team want to watch and enjoy these games. I often walk around the office and as we dual screen, I see a sea of screens with the football on one side and their work on the other. At the end of the day our team are all adults and if they want to watch the game, they can. I've no doubt they'll work to their targets regardless.
