ChatGPT can now browse the internet

ended 28. September 2023

Open Ai announced on X last night that “ChatGPT can now browse the internet to provide you with current and authoritative information, complete with direct links to sources. It is no longer limited to data before September 2021.” Any thoughts on what this could mean, for business, marketing, jobs and humanity as a whole, wing them across.

ChatGPT's latest internet browsing capability is a game-changer, especially for smaller businesses that often face constraints in terms of resources, knowledge, and budgets. The beauty of AI lies in its potential to empower these teams, enabling them to create compelling marketing strategies and content fueled by real-time information and data. This capability opens doors that might have otherwise remained closed for these businesses. Whether it's staying ahead of rapidly evolving trends, conducting in-depth analysis of current market dynamics, or crafting accurate and engaging content, AI's expanding opportunities for businesses are nothing short of remarkable.

I think this is great news for small businesses, who can utilise this to find relevant, up to date articles on the key points related to their businesses. These articles can be great points for discussion on their social media, as well as invaluable in helping them keep up to date with the latest trends and events in their industry. Up until now, the info found has been outdated and unreliable, usually scattered with broken links, so it's a welcome update, making Chat GPT even more of a useful tool to help create content, learn, and market your business.

The announcement about ChatGPT's real-time internet browsing is groundbreaking. AI offers rapid data analysis and insights, but human leadership remains essential for strategic decisions and creative innovation. In business, AI streamlines tasks but doesn't replace human intuition. In marketing, success lies in blending AI-driven insights with human creativity. As AI automates tasks, human roles shift towards strategic thinking and ethical guidance.

While AI enhances efficiency, human values must guide its responsible development. Businesses benefit most by integrating AI strategically, with humans directing its use and valuing the synergy between human creativity and AI efficiency for innovative solutions.

AI is a really great bridge between the knowledge I have and the current capabilities I have in terms of human resources in my business. For small businesses with a lean team, AI that can tap into real-time insights is a genuine game changer and time saver.

As a content writer, this will be incredibly beneficial as without browsing, CHatGPT has previously suggested inaccurate and made-up responses.

For instance, when I asked what my company did it responded with something around apparel and there is no business at all with our name in that industry.
I then supplied our web address but of course it couldn't use it, therefore it kept referring to us as a clothing designer.

As marketers, when writing content, we always link back to the source of the information and this ability to ask ChatGPT to do this is a game changer.

ChatGPT has spent the last year democratising access to the world's knowledge, prior to 2021. This latest announcement from OpenAI will enable millions of small businesses around the globe to drastically enhance their productivity, now with current and relevant information. At Find Me Sales, ChatGPT has empowered us to code in one day what previously required five. As an increasing number of businesses embrace and adopt generative AI to augment their in-house capabilities, we may well witness a resurgence in productivity where it has been stagnating for years. The connection of ChatGPT to the internet now introduces unparalleled real-time adaptability, further propelling the potential for innovation and efficiency.

ChatGPT has already proved that AI has legitimate use cases for small business. Now that it has access to the Internet, so it no longer hits the glass ceiling it had before, is fantastic news to increase it's usability for all sorts of business uses.

If you've never tried ChatGPT, where have you been? It's simple to use but like any business tool, it is a tool - ask it poor questions and/or give it poor prompts, and it will give you poor answers. Treat it not like a computer but like a new worker in your business, teach it what you would teach them, ask it what you would ask them (and/or what they would ask you), and it will prove to be the most cost effective new worker you have ever employed.

You can use AI in two key ways:

1) to make you sound like everyone else:

If you use AI to write for your brand, remember it isn't capable of original thought, it's taking from existing sources so you are getting a homogenised version of everyone sort-of-like-you who's already out there, in theory over time results from that will just get worse;

2) to optimise the process of you being uniquely you:

This is where AI having up-to-date data and real-time internet access can give you an edge. As AI aggregates and distils data very quickly, it enables you to cut research time, keep abreast of your field, summarise new thinking and cross-reference to related sources and ideas, track those ideas, spot trends and new dynamics... it supplements and ratifies original thinking very efficiently. With real-time data that will only get better.

If you've ever rolled your eyes at a teenager copying the latest TikTok dance, think hard about how you're using AI - are you a creator or a follower?
