AI Upskilling Pays Off: Workers with GenAI Skills Earn Up to 20% More, Coursera Finds

Artificial intelligence is no longer a future skill – it’s today’s pay rise.

According to Coursera’s 2025 Learner Outcomes Report (published 2 October), employees who can prove competence with AI tools now command up to 20 per cent higher salaries than those who cannot. Across more than 52,000 learners surveyed worldwide from its reported 168 million registered learners, 93 per cent have already used AI in their work or studies, and 47 per cent say they use it daily.

The report names generative AI the fastest-growing skill globally, with learners treating it as essential to career security. Among those completing GenAI programmes, 

  • 91 per cent achieved a positive career outcome
  • 42 per cent gained a pay rise, and 35 per cent said productivity improved
  • 94 per cent of full time professionals reported a positive impact at work.

The data also reveals a simultaneous strengthening of human abilities, with around 71 per cent of learners improving critical thinking and problem-solving. 

This suggests that the most valuable workers are learning to pair machine efficiency with human judgement, supported by technical improvements where three-quarters of learners who needed the skill for their job improved in data analysis (72%), two-thirds in AI (66%), and 70 per cent in machine learning.

Coursera’s companion analysis, 6 Highly Desirable AI Skills for 2025 (June 2025), shows where that investment is heading. The most sought-after AI capabilities on their platform now centre on

  • natural-language processing
  • machine learning
  • algorithm design
  • data analysis
  • mathematics and statistics

Yet the report's publication also reinforces the need for “workplace” or human-centred skills, creative thinking, communication, ethics and decision-making, noting LinkedIn’s 2023 finding that tech professionals who pair these softer skills with technical ability are promoted 13 per cent faster (LinkedIn 2023 Future of the Workplace: AI at Work).

As Britain debates productivity, these figures underline a simple point: AI fluency is now an economic skill, not a technical luxury. The next competitive divide may not be between humans and machines, but between workers trained to collaborate with them, and those left behind.

The evidence is clear. AI isn’t taking jobs, it’s taking the dull bits. The professionals who thrive personally and financially are the ones learning how to think with AI, not fight against it. Businesses must invest in people and AI enablement, prioritising human judgment and ethics above pure machine output. That said, this is not a productivity increase silver bullet. Organisations have a duty of care to ensure their AI-enhanced workflows don't become the modern workhouse treadmill, with the machine taking the low-hanging fruit, leaving staff to grind out the stressful and complex jobs for hours without breaks.

We’re likely to see a growing divide between those who adopt AI and those who don’t. High earners who learn to leverage these tools will use them to become even more productive and increase their income, while people who ignore them risk being left behind. AI isn’t replacing workers yet, but it’s already widening the gap between those who adapt and those who don’t.

AI upskilling does pay off. But from what I’m seeing in the field, it’s not just technical competence driving 20% pay rises. The real differentiator is emotional intelligence. Those thriving with AI aren’t just fluent in prompts; they’re fluent in people. Those who communicate clearly with humans communicate better with machines and get far better outputs. Naturally, schools and universities will start upskilling the next generations with AI. My worry is that the focus stays on the so-called "hard" skills of technical AI proficiency. Very soon, AI skills will become as common as being able to use email. The next premium won’t be on mastering the tools, but on mastering ourselves. Ironically, the so-called "soft” skills, empathy, communication, creativity, ethics, are proving to be the hardest for AI to mimic. So-called hard skills are being mastered left, right and centre. Never has there been a more important time to take a break from your screens and talk to your fellow humans!
