Would Rachel Reeves be right to force pension funds to commit assets to UK based investments?

Journalist: Jon King, Daily Express Online

ended 05. May 2025

The Treasury is reportedly preparing to formalise an agreement which would see pension funds commit a significant slice of their assets—up to 10%—into private markets, with half of that required to be channelled into UK-based investments.

There are also warnings that if firms don't voluntarily comply, the Government may legislate to enforce the move.

The Daily Express is looking for strong views in three to four sentences detailing whether the Chancellor's reported plan is a good idea or not.

Pension funds exist to deliver the best outcomes for their members, not to serve as government policy tools. Incentivise investment in UK assets by all means, but any form of compulsion would set a dangerous precedent. Trustees must be free to act solely in the interests of savers.
