Financial advisors - how are you helping your wealthiest clients prepare before the Budget?

What are they asking you about and worrying about most, and what action, if anything, are you proposing to them before the Budget?

For my wealthiest clients, the overriding theme before this Budget is uncertainty. The big questions are around pensions and inheritance tax, given the proposed inclusion of pensions in estates from 2027, as well as speculation on property and capital gains tax reform. Clients are asking whether to crystallise tax-free cash, accelerate gifts to children and grandchildren. The actions we’re considering are pragmatic rather than panicked. That means reviewing trusts, whole-of-life policies and business relief structures, running gifting strategies under the ‘normal expenditure out of income’ exemption, and stress-testing what happens if allowances are reduced or frozen again. What I’m emphasising is that knee-jerk moves can backfire: it’s about balancing today’s political noise with long-term planning. The Budget may shift the goalposts, but good planning ensures clients still stays the distance

Our clients naturally have concerns over how anything announced in the Budget will impact them and the people they love and care about.

There's so much speculation and uncertainty that it fuels worry, along with the temptation to make rash decisions.

Our advice to clients is to resist making permanent, irreversible decisions based on speculation.

Big areas of interest for all of us coming out of the Budget will be inheritance tax, pensions and property taxes.
