Urgent: Iran war - what are you telling clients?

Journalist: Laura Miller, Freelance

ended 11. March 2026

I'm working on a piece for Professional Adviser about how clients are reacting and what advisers are telling clients to do regarding the US-Israeli war with Iran. I only have a few hours to work on this so please reply asap.

  • How worried are clients about what is happening in the Middle East?
  • Are you having more phone calls/ requests for info?
  • What practical advice are you giving clients?
  • Beyond ‘don’t panic', what are you telling them regarding their portfolios, short and medium term planning etc?

Thanks in advance, Laura

Clients are definitely more alert, but I would not describe the mood as blind panic. It is more a rise in nervous energy, more check-in calls, more clients wanting to understand whether this is noise or something that genuinely changes the direction of their plans. The clients feeling it most tend to be those close to retirement, those drawing income, or those sitting on cash and wondering whether now is the wrong time to invest. My advice goes well beyond just saying do not panic. I am reminding clients what their portfolio was built to do in the first place, whether their time horizon has actually changed, and whether their liquidity position is strong enough for the short term. Geopolitical shocks create headlines and volatility, but that does not automatically mean the strategy is wrong. The real danger is clients making emotional decisions at exactly the wrong moment, so the focus is discipline, cashflow, time horizon and keeping perspective.
