Elon Musk has reinstated Trump’s account on Twitter. Musk made the announcement in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time after holding a poll on, you guessed it, Twitter. The “yes” vote won, with 51.8%. Newspage asked a selection of social media experts and small business owners for their thoughts.

As Oscar Wilde said, “There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about”. In the past couple of weeks, Musk has been triumphantly tweeting that the ‘numbers are up’ and that there have been more people using the platform than ever. Musk and Trump have always used Twitter for attention, dropping divisive viewpoints onto the platform to get a reaction from people. Getting ‘the numbers up’ now that Trump is back is inevitable, and in Musk’s eyes, that’s a win.

We all know Musk is a head case, who had no respect for social norms, regulators or the law. Lots of similarities with Trump. He should never be allowed back on Twitter. You can’t shout “fire” in a crowded theatre.

The Twitter feathered friend might have been freed, but it’s flipping the bird to womankind with Trump allowed back in the nest. That deeply misogynistic and hideous orange example of a man has his platform back to spout his vitriol; a dangerous step backwards for society.

Trump's voice & Musk's platform is a marriage made in Arkham. The 51% vote quoted to vindicate the decision is as reliable as a US collegiate vote but that's where we are. A heavy defeat for those who stand against him but we would be naive to think that this account won't be straight to the top of the 'pass me the popcorn list' with likes, comments and retweets that often resembled a miswired tumbola such was the continuous activity. Just in time for 2024 presidential run too, coincidence, I think not.

Musk and Trump are two attention-grabbing narcissists, each using the other for their own gains. Dangerous and detached from the real world. Toxic meets toxic.

This is a very dangerous topic, especially in the UK where simply reading something controversial or unpopular can brand you a fascist, usually by a section of the population who don't truly understand the meaning of the word. I believe that the only way we learn is by coming into contact with opinions and beliefs that differ from our own. Even if you violently disagree with someone, they still have much to teach you about life. It is only by taking in the whole rainbow that we can choose our prefered flavour.
