Any thoughts on the press release below, send them across ASAP.

Santander UK has today announced the launch of its new Regular Saver with an interest rate of 8.00% AER/gross (variable), which includes a 5.00% AER/gross (variable) bonus for the first 12 months, available to all Santander current account customers, including its fee-free Everyday current account customers. After 12 months, the interest reduces to 3.00% AER/gross (variable), helping customers build up their savings for the long-term.

Customers can save up to £200 a month, meaning those customers who choose to deposit the maximum amount each month, can build up the following including interest:

  • £2,504 in year 1
  • £5,018 in year 21

The Regular Saver is exclusively available to all Santander current account customers, including customers with a Santander Everyday, Edge, Edge Student, Edge Up and Explorer current account. New customers can additionally benefit from Santander’s latest switching offer, £180 when they switch to a Santander current account and meet the qualifying criteria.2

João Soares, Head of Savings at Santander UK said: “We know customers want savings accounts that are easy to understand, offer a competitive rate and deliver value. That’s why our new Regular Saver rewards customers with a market leading rate, while supporting customers’ who want to build up a habit of saving regularly. New customers who switch their current account to us using the Current Account Switching Service can enjoy even more benefits, such as £180 to save or spend.”

An 8% headline is brilliant, but let’s be honest about what it is: a smart way for Santander to get people into its current-account ecosystem.

It is still a good deal. For someone who struggles to save, £200 a month at 8% is a proper incentive to build a habit rather than leave money rotting in an account paying 1%.

But this is not an 8% home for your savings. It is capped at £200 a month, variable, and drops to 3% after a year. The bank is rewarding consistency, not handing out free money.

My advice is: take the rate if it fits your life, automate the £200 just after payday, and do not confuse a regular saver with your whole savings strategy. Keep emergency cash accessible, use the best rates for larger balances, and set an alert before the bonus disappears.

The 8% gets you in. The real win is whether you leave with a better savings habit.
