More than 60,000 homes in Scotland are at risk of repossession, according to Scottish Labour.

Is the housing market in Scotland struggling more than elsewhere in the UK?

Why is the Scottish market struggling more than most?

What would you like to see introduced to stimulate the market?

It’s hard to fathom where this kind of prediction stems from as with the mortgage charter having been adopted by the majority of lenders, practically the route to repossession is rightly likely to be even more difficult than was already the case with most lenders already reluctant to pull that particular trigger as anything other than a last resort. In Scotland the reality is the housing market has proven to be more robust than in many other areas of the UK and in fact has seen average price rises in many areas as opposed to consistent falls in most other areas. The persistent lack of supply whilst demand and mortgage availability has remained strong, means that the market in Scotland shows no real signs of weakening particularly in the critical first time buyer market. The rental market,as a result of ill conceived government interventions, has seen rents increase more than elsewhere in the UK and so this factor has also contributed to a healthy and competitive purchase market in Scotland

60,000 homes in Scotland are at risk of repossession! WOW! I can't begin to imagine how worrying that must be for those individuals and or families.

With the increased cost of living the Manchester Mortgage Centre are having lengthy discussions with clients to see how they can avoid falling into financial difficulty in the coming, weeks, months and even years in some cases. Building financial resilience with clients is paramount to us, especially with the introduction of consumer duty.

The UK housing market is heading for some big changes in my opinion. I believe that the houses towards the top end of the market will suffer and the smaller properties at the bottom end of the market will become more popular leaving them out of reach of the people who need them. More schemes to help low-income earners get on the property ladder are needed.

The whole of the UK is seeing the cost of living bite hard into once relatively secure home finances. Recent figures show many homeowners are struggling with increased mortgage payments. Scotland's specific housing struggles might stem from a combination of factors such as job uncertainty and regional economic disparities.

Possible reasons for this could include a slower post-recession recovery, unique supply-demand imbalances, and varying policies affecting housing affordability. Tackling debt on this scale requires a comprehensive approach ranging from targeted financial assistance and rental support and addressing regulatory hurdles. It's crucial for policymakers to collaborate across sectors and levels of government to create sustainable solutions that provide security and stability to those at risk of repossession.
