ProtectZ conference July 2023

ended 26. February 2023

A broker within the mortgage and protection space has alerted us to the fact that protection-focused events platform, Protection Review, is putting on a conference in July — ProtectZ (see screengrab below) — focused on making protection "more appealing" to a younger audience. He's “furious” that all the speakers are under 30, believing it to be ageist and implying that no one aged over 30 will have viable suggestions for making protection relevant to a younger demographic. What are your thoughts on this?

Well, GenZ are in their early to mid 30's now so I guess it makes sense to promote to its target audience. I would say though that £360a ticket is a bit much...
I would be interested to see if they corner this market and then go into the other generations too!

That is crazy, having completed on a house and having a baby a month later at 26- why wouldn't protection be important to people under 30.
I have recently had 1 client at 27 have a brain tumour, and because they didn't believe at 25 when they bought the property that critical illness is important, they had to rely on sick pay from work during a very challenging 12 months.
Appealing to under 30's and getting them to understand the importance of protection is a fantastic idea- love it!

I don't see any issue with having a conference aimed specifically at a certain demographic. I would however be a little concerned about the agenda; there seems to be more there about tech and social media than actual protection, with very little about any sort of advice. So, are they just looking at how to engage with potential customers in an execution-only online journey, which traditionally delivers poor outcomes for consumers? I hope that at least some of the discussion looks at how tech-enabled advisers can engage and assist GenZ clients; they'll get better outcomes and have protection plans more likely to do the job they expect when and if they ever have to claim.

Someone needs to take a chill pill if that made him furious. Maybe if our industry had less events mostly involving old farts in grey suits, and more with vibrant, young people with fresh ideas we'd be doing a better job of engaging the public when talking about protection, which in itself is a horrible, old fashioned, off-putting word that no member of the public really understands.

P.S. Sorry to all my industry friends in grey suits!

I must say when I first read this I thought, aha the date of the conference is April 1st - very clever early April Fool. Sadly nope it's not!
I can't really understand why any professional group would try and select a particular age group to talk about a subject that all financial advisers have good experience in. If you back this up by the fact that the average age for UK advisers is in their 50's+ this seems like a GREAT way to just provoke the majority of business writers.
I'd more expect a conference for people over 50's who have the most experience than this but still I think that would be wrong.
As a mid 50's adviser who's tech-savvy and has been providing advice on protection for 35 years now I am insulted in both the ageist stance of this and furthermore the price of the event, lol.
Nurse, can I have another blanket!
