National newspaper seeking BNPL case studies

ended 20. May 2025

Following yesterday's HM Treasury announcement on the Buy-Now, Pay-Later market, a journalist on a national newspaper is looking for views on when these schemes do have a value, if used responsibly, and areas where you think should not be made available, such as buying a take-away or even a flight abroad? Any views, send them across. Deadline is 18:00.

These schemes do work for big ticket purchases but I have seen mortgage applicants who have 20-30 BNPL's at a time or more. When you can get a takeaway pizza for £34 spread over 3mths there is a greater problem as people will use it and some will also abuse it. To the public, this looks like clever budgeting, to the lender it looks like inability to manage money. More control of this is needed and for people to understand how to use credit well rather than just for the sake of it.

When used responsibly, BNPL can be a useful tool, but unless these agreements are closely monitored, they can quickly become unwieldy and unaffordable. This can have serious knock-on effects people don’t consider. Imagine missing a payment on that cheeky takeaway – it probably doesn’t seem like a big deal, but a missed payment such as this, in some instances, could cause a mortgage application to fail. Consumers must be cautious when entering credit agreements, but they also deserve protection, so I’m glad to see this announcement from HM Treasury.
