I hate to be the harbinger of financial sobriety in an era of digital currency delirium but meme coins are the sirens of the cryptocurrency world, luring investors to dash themselves upon the rocks of financial ruin. Even mainstream cryptocurrencies carry significant risks, with extreme volatility, regulatory uncertainty and questionable intrinsic values. But meme coins stand out as particularly dangerous, given they are typically built on nothing more than hype. They lack even the facade of intrinsic value, utility or any semblance of a sustainable business model. Therefore, while you might argue for a very small allocation to established cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum in a diversified portfolio, the same can’t be said for meme coins, as even for those bullish on cryptocurrency, these assets represent an unacceptable level of risk for the vast majority of investors.

First up, meme coins require a strong community to thrive as well as a good enough communal idea. The top ones for 2025 for me include LONG. I am a long only investor, and the fact that other long-only investors have congregated around this idea makes sense in a bull market. The mascot is a borzoi dog, a dog which is long, and the community donates thousands to dog charities. Meanwhile, LOL is a meme about the abbreviation LOL that's used so much in online chat so it captures mindshare. All memecoins are about is community and a cult. Off the back of LOL, they have developed games and art and donate to kids' charities. BERT is a dog with millions of followers on Instagram, which has sadly died. But he was on the front page of the New York Times and was going to be used in promotion of the new Paddington Bear movie. The community has created dog collars for tracking pets and donates heavily to charities globally. And BRUCE, Instagram’s favourite cow, could also outperform in 2025.

Meme coins have been the best trade from a crypto currency perspective throughout 2024, and this doesn’t look like it will change anytime soon. Coins such as WIF and Popcat have had massive rallies this year and I do see strength continuing in blue chip memes such as Doge and Pepe. The Ai/Desci meta has also been positive and I expect the trend to continue in 2025 with coins such as Goat and Zerebro also enjoying a lot of attention.
