Marketing strategies for crypto, Web3 and blockchain companies

ended 27. September 2023

Keen to hear from marketers about any specific strategies they employ, or would employ, to market crypto, Web3, and blockchain brands — as well as NFTs — to the public, i.e. DTC. What are the challenges (presumably much of the target audience not really understanding the product) and how do you overcome them? More broadly, how does marketing crypto firms differ from standard marketing techniques? Any examples, please share.

Marketing crypto, Web3, blockchain brands, and NFTs to a DTC audience requires a blend of education and engagement. The primary challenge is the complex nature of these products and the misconceptions surrounding them. To address this:

Educate First: Content marketing plays a pivotal role. Infographics, explainer videos, and webinars simplify complex concepts, making them accessible to the layperson.
Community Building: Engaging with audiences on platforms like Discord or Clubhouse fosters trust and facilitates real-time Q&A.
Influencer Collaborations: Partnering with trusted figures in the crypto space can demystify concepts and lend credibility.
Storytelling: Highlight real-world applications of blockchain and NFTs to make them relatable.
Crypto marketing leans heavily on community engagement and continuous education. For instance, NBA Top Shot effectively marketed their NFTs by blending the familiar (NBA highlights) with the novel (NFTs), making them more digestible for the masses.

Marketing something that the general public doesn't understand isn't actually that difficult. You just need to use an analogy to compare it to something they know well.

For example:

Blockchain is like a digital notebook - When a transaction happens, it gets written down in everyone's notebook simultaneously, and can't be erased or changed.

Web3 is like a library where the books talk to each other so you get personalized book recommendations.

NFTs are like digital collector's items. Picture them as unique trading cards in the digital world.

By connecting things we don't know, to things we do know, the complex becomes simple - which is essential in marketing, as confused buyers don't buy.

The Web3 and Crypto space is exciting, but it comes with unique challenges, one being that a significant portion of the audience won’t yet fully grasp new product ideas. To tackle this, successful Web3 and Crypto marketing strategies will focus on simplifying the complex. We break down the jargon into digestible, relatable content that resonates with the audience.

In my experience, standard marketing techniques often fall short in this space. It's crucial to embrace the digital world's fast pace and the crypto community's specific online channels. We’ve found success by blending search marketing, digital PR, and paid ads with influencer marketing. This dynamic mix connects us directly with enthusiasts and investors.

In summary, this space requires a blend of education and engagement. It's about making the technology accessible and forging a connection with the community.
