My name is Julie Barber, 47, CEO of TechyTots, an award-winning children’s coding franchise in Sutton, Greater London. My journey from a single mother on benefits to a successful business leader is a testament to resilience and determination. After leaving school at 16, I worked various jobs to support my family. Life changed when I became a single parent at 30, juggling multiple jobs while raising two young children on a limited income. My youngest daughter’s severe anxiety led me to resign from work and rely on universal credit. In 2018, I became a TechyTots franchisee, and by 2021, I bought the company, becoming CEO. This transition brought challenges, but I upskilled by completing different courses. Under my leadership, TechyTots expanded, won the 2024 Clubhub award, and made a significant community impact. My story, from surviving on benefits to leading an award-winning business, is one of perseverance. I hope to inspire others to start their own business and change their life.

I crochet full time as a living .Unfortunately I’ll never be rich but I absolutely love my job.

The trouble with crochet is that it takes a long time to make so I had to churn out loads of small, quick to make items to sell at weekends which was slightly soul destroying.

Pre Covid sales were great but now The Cost of Living Crisis has hit hard people aren’t spending their money on cute frivolous things.

My passion lies in making rather extravagant hats which take an age to make so are rather expensive but they’re something I could never give up making. They have been worn by Henry Cavill and Jason Momoa.

I tried getting myself a ‘proper’ job but it was horrible so I quit and jumped headfirst into the world of teaching people how to crochet.

Now I have a little studio where I teach kids after school crochet courses, crochet school holiday clubs and various classes for grown ups. It’s marvellous fun.

Over 86% of parents have helped another parent out with the school run at some point because we are all in the same boat. The cost of this after-school childcare? A return pick up at some point in the future.

I have built an app that lets parents build their digital village. A micro social network where parents can connect with people they trust to collect their child from school in the event they are ever stuck at work / can’t make the school run. They can also help them in return.

For safeguarding reasons, everyone has to verify their ID before they can set up an account on the app.

The app is also connected to the school so they can see who is collecting each child, with a photo, in case they don’t recognise the person picking up.

Fetching is now being used by schools across the country with more joining this year. The technology exists to make life so much easier for parents. Now is the time to embrace it!

I came from a social care system child being fostered then adopted being told I would never make anything of my life. To then building a business while having 3 children under 5 and continuing my businesses to this date and owning my home mortgage free at the age of 30.

It all started during a walk in Battersea Park 2007 when I saw a woman walking ten dogs. I’d heard of dog walkers in the U.S. but never realised it was popular in the UK. That day, I rushed home, and with my partner, who was just learning to build websites, we brainstormed a name and bought the domain. We set up the business almost overnight.

Starting solo, I cycled between clients, giving each dog an hour’s walk. Quickly overwhelmed with requests, my partner joined full-time. We soon grew from a bike to a van, building a successful business with little investment.

There were no rules, legislation, or mentors when we started, but with common sense and a focus on the dogs’ welfare, we thrived. With our experience, we founded Yappily, an ethical directory connecting dog owners with qualified walkers, trainers, and groomers, helping others start and grow responsibly.

A decade ago, I was a self-professed workaholic, relentlessly climbing the corporate ladder with a Maserati and a Birkin bag as what I believed were the ultimate symbols of success. By 30, I had achieved everything I set out to do, including securing a leadership role in a publicly traded company—only to find these accomplishments hollow. But in 2017, a near-fatal traffic accident shattered my world and redefined my understanding of true achievement. Defying all odds, I not only survived but also relearned how to walk.

Originally from Finland and now based in Switzerland, I now have my own business as a life and business strategist, guiding business owners and leaders through high-pressure environments, particularly in the tech industry. My journey from the heights of corporate success to a life of meaningful impact reflects a profound shift in what I now see as the greatest luxury—living with purpose and helping others unlock their full potential.
