It's frustrating to see figures like this when only recently the Office for National Statistics announced there were about 1.25m job vacancies and each day employers tell me that they are crying out for talent, particularly for women. There's a fundamental mismatch in the market between open opportunities and available skills. If the government is serious about making Britain an international talent hub, it must start investing in longer term talent frameworks, and employers must also commit to new ways to source and foster diverse talent.

It is no surprise that these figures have gone up considering the general economic climate. I expect to see this rise significantly over the next six months. The good news is that the labour market is still tight and there are vacancies out there for those who want work. The problem is these vacancies tend to be low skilled, low paid work such as the hospitality sector. It is surprising to see such a disparity over one quarter between men and women. More research into why this has occurred should take place to understand this.

The rise in young people who are classified as NEET is not a surprise to me when our education system only really caters for those with an ability to be "book smart." This causes huge levels of disengagement with young people who learn in other ways. For those who are Neurodiverse or those who's abilities show up creatively or practically. If our education system, from a much earlier age installed a celebration of all types of learners and skills then maybe we wouldn't see the high levels of disengagement in traditional education and employment that we are seeing now. There are many, many, many things I have learnt as an adult that have been so much more useful and relevant than what I learnt at school. But this is only because I am passionate about lifelong learning. I was lucky enough to have been coached and mentored through my teenage years. This allowed me to realise that 'book smarts' aren't the only kind of worthwhile smarts to have. Perhaps if we empowered young people with this belief early on in life, they wouldn't feel all the various and complex reasons why they don't show up. Thats the power of coaching young, impressionable minds. you have a unique opportunity to shape their experiences of education and their concept of success. Coaching young people not only install a sense of confidence in them but it also allows them to learn about themselves; to realise their own strengths and weaknesses and find the values that they align to. By tapping into this uniqueness of each individual we can help them realise their own individual journey to success. Along with what they can contribute to the world. When you have a clear purpose in life then you show up time and time again, because you know what you are doing matters. It means something. THAT's How we get young people to engage!
