The i Paper - Body confidence

ended 15. May 2023

An i Paper journalist is looking for therapists/health professionals/experts to share their top tips on how to feel more confident in the body you have.

She's after really specific and practical advice, and ideally nothing too obvious - so tips that our readers wouldn't have necessarily thought of before, but ones they can easily implement into their lives.

Stop focusing on your flaws and comparing yourself to others. It's important to feel good enough being you. Body shapes change based on what we might be going through, but that does not mean you are not enough if this happens. Think of the things you are grateful for about your body.

Wardrobe Audit: Go through your closet and remove clothes that don't fit or make you feel uncomfortable. Wearing clothes that fit well and make you feel good can do wonders for your body confidence.

Movement for Joy: Find a type of physical activity that you genuinely enjoy, whether it's dancing, yoga, walking in nature, or anything else. This helps create a positive association between your body and feelings of joy.

Create a Body Gratitude List: Make a list of all the things your body allows you to do and add to it regularly. This can help shift your focus from appearance to function.

Develop a Strength-based Fitness Routine: Exercise is often associated with weight loss, but that doesn't have to be the focus. Instead, aim to appreciate what your body is capable of by setting strength, flexibility, or endurance goals. This shift in focus from how you look to what you can do can help improve body confidence.

Begin to acknowledge what you have. Comparison is the thief of joy.
Spending time looking at the good parts of you and not just appearance. Kindness, self compassion. What small things do you enjoy about being you.
Visualise the person you want to become not the person you believe you are right now. The brain doesn’t know the difference between real and imagination so focus on how you want to feel confident not how you currently don’t feel confident.
