IBM has released its 2026 X-Force Threat Intelligence Index, warning that attackers are using AI to speed up scanning and exploitation of basic security gaps.

• 44% increase in attacks starting with exploitation of public-facing applications (often missing authentication controls).
• Vulnerability exploitation was the leading cause of incidents observed by X-Force in 2025 (40%).
• Active ransomware/extortion groups rose 49% YoY; supply chain / third-party compromises are up ~4x since 2020.
