HR Grapevine - Why is the gig economy a challenge for HR leaders and is it going to be the inevitable future for all workers?

ended 23. March 2023

A journalist at HR Grapevine is putting together a video story on the future of the gig economy and the ramifications for HR Leaders. (He was a freelancer for 12 years so he knows the uncertainty for essentially being a sole freelancer).

He's looking for an expert to offer their thoughts on the gig economy workforce being projected to increase 3X from 7.7 million in 2021 to 23.5 million in 2030 and how this will affect company culture, employee sense of belonging and long-term strategies for leaders in terms of recruiting, maintaining and investing in dependable workers.

The explosion of the gig economy has been a revolution in our working culture but with that comes a need for our support model to adapt to keep people invested, productive and happy in their chosen careers.
We need to be able to support the increasingly unique career choices of people whether they are independent workers or long time employees in major organisations.
How do we support working parents in a way that promotes
a healthy family environment? How are workers given the right opportunities for mental health support to keep them happy and economically productive? How do we ensure workers are supported with their physical health to keep them thriving without more burden on the NHS?
It is about recognising the positive correlation between worker wellbeing and economic productivity. Investing in the digital healthcare revolution with preventative solutions will be key to both the continuing growth of the gig economy and realising the positive long term impact on GDP.

All businesses should be moving towards outcome based operating models and HR should be a big player in how that impacts employees, contractors and gig economy workers. There will always be people who want to work multiple roles, who don't want to be tied down, and businesses should recognise the wealth of talent and variable cost that creates for their business as a huge boon.
