With the current crisis in the financial advice sector, it is essential that employers look after their mental and physical health & the health of their employees to ensure business outcomes are not undermined by stress. Our emotional reactions to crises or threats can be overwhelming. They take over our brains and bodies and make it hard for us to function as normal. When we become overfocused on threat our ability to be flexible and adaptable is reduced. To manage this sense of overwhelm slow rhythmic breathing can be used unobtrusively to soothe our stress response and clear our thinking in a range of stressful situations. Mindfulness is another useful strategy that allows us to step back from ruminating and negative thoughts that can undermine our resilience and confidence. Over the longer term taking regular breaks, putting boundaries around work and accessing support from friends and family further assist us to stay healthy and to future-proof us against stress.
