How attractive are Reits in 2026?

Goes without saying, REITs remain the cornerstone of getting into property investments for armchair investors. In fact, I have started seeing it become increasingly popular amongst everyday consumer investors, just like you would pitch some money into another ETF or mutual fund.

The trouble with REITs, as someone who has seen a few from close quarters is, these funds can very quickly become highly illiquid. For example, take commercial REITs that would invest money into storage and warehouses, or even office spaces. With one downturn in the market demand for these sorts of properties (for example, changes in the business rates landscape), the entire market can be affected, which will inevitably hit the end consumer. These circumstances have not happened often, but nobody can say that they will never occur.

I would simply split my money equally between a NASDAQ 100, FTSE All World and a S&P 500 ETF if I wanted peace of mind with my small savings.

I don't advise clients as that isn't my gig, but I recently made a very small investment into a tech start-up that we use in our business because I believe in the founder and the platform. It was an EIS investment - so I immediately had tax relief hit my PAYE tax code which. Yes, my money is locked away now and it is risky - but I am backing a business I believe in and I think more people should be aware of EIS and SEIS investments. Investing in great founders to build great UK brands is something I am passionate about. After all, BEAR exists now because someone believed in myself and Michael in the early days.
