Deconstructing Davos

What do you make of Davos? As in: how do you perceive it? Do you see it a much-needed gathering of the political and economic elites to discuss key global matters, or does the whole event alienate you on countless levels and make you sick to the stomach? Speak with reason or straight from the gut (though mind the language). We're writing a story on the people's perception of this global annual shindig in the snow. So: like a modern-day Derrida, deconstruct Davos.

Davos has always been a pretentious event, shrouded in secrecy and elitism. That said, it makes the world go around. Rarely are so many world political and business leaders in such a small space, and this makes it very influential. Davos should become more transparent although this could hit it's effectiveness. It is, to all intents and purposes an anathema of capitalism or the shining light of it, depending on ones politics.

The disconnect between the champagne socialism on the Magic Mountain and the grim reality of doing business in the UK has never been starker. While these unelected technocrats debate the nuances of the polycrisis the average SME owner is simply trying to survive the very inflation and regulatory strangulation that Davos thinking helped create.

Davos has become a high altitude echo chamber where corporate leaders pledge allegiance to stakeholder capitalism while quietly hoping nobody notices they are slashing headcounts back home to preserve margins. The World Economic Forum is no longer the cockpit of the global economy but a retirement home for bad ideas that have failed everywhere they have been tried.

Davos is increasingly looking like the space station in the movie Elysium, a sanitised, orbital paradise where the elite discuss the fate of the world, totally detached from the dystopian reality down on Earth. They are busy tweaking the AC settings in the VIP lounge while the engine room is on fire.

If this were a project in a modern business, it would have been scrapped years ago for failure to deliver results. We are watching the same cycle of history play out: the "Galactic Senate" meets, offers platitudes about "global challenges," and then returns home to push the same austerity measures that stifle real progress.

Real change doesn't happen in a bubble in Switzerland; it happens when you stop protecting legacy systems and start building things that actually serve people. Right now, Davos is just a simulation of leadership, a distraction from the reality that the current economic model is failing the vast majority. It’s time to land the ship and look at the damage on the ground.
