Businesses battling energy costs

We are a vintage lifestyle company with two bricks and mortar shops based in Bristol and Newport (South Wales). We sell vintage clothes, vintage bridal-wear and serve afternoon teas. We are a very visual business. We are currently locked into a terrible 5 year contract with our electricity provider at our Bristol premises. As a result, we are now only open 3 days a week due to extortionate electricity bills.

Kate Ashwell

Kate and founded Ashwell & Co alongside her husband, Will in July 2014. 

She has had a keen interest in the alternative and fashion since she was a teenager but her true love of vintage and the history of fashion was born when she moved to Camden to study theatre at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Kate is an expert on shapes, styles and the history of 20th century vintage fashion with a particular expertise in wedding dresses including how to clean and restore vintage pieces.

 


We are not near London but we are an outdoor centre on a frozen loch in Scotland! We're hoping for a busy holiday season and we are lucky that we entered a new energy contract in July which doubled our energy costs from 15 pence per kilowatt hour to 35 pence per kilowatt hour and we're aware of nearby businesses who are now renewing contracts being charged over 65 pence per kilowatt hour. We're taking a number of measures but we have to soak up some of the cost because the consumer has a price threshold that is not in line with inflation.

Laura McNally

Formerly an RAF Officer, Laura has since worked for the Environment Agency in Flood Defence and Sustainable Business teams. Latterly she worked for Forestry and Land Scotland leading the operational team responsible for managing the land and attractions for visitors in the Inverness and Cairngorms areas of the Highland Region. She was responsible for the management of the honeypot sites at Loch Morlich and the Green Lochan in the central Cairngorms throughout COVID19 restrictions. Now CEO of Loch Insh Outdoor Centre she leads the development and implementation of the COVID recovery strategy. 

Laura is also proud to have worked with De Montfort University's textiles department as an industry partner to encourage students to design-out the need for plastic in sportswear and guest lectured on the topic of sustainable design and waste.
