Let’s call this what it is: commercial negligence. BT isn't asking small businesses to 'move', they are forcing them to rebuild from scratch two weeks before Christmas. These website tools were the 'carrot' used to entice users into long-term broadband contracts; now, the rug is being pulled.

The advice to simply 'move' is technically misleading. These are proprietary systems; you cannot export the code. A local florist or plumber has to rebuild their entire online presence manually.

The real scandal is the invisible damage. When these sites go dark, years of hard-earned Google rankings (SEO) vanish instantly because the URL structures won't match the new site. Most sole traders don't know how to manage DNS settings or 301 redirects, and the guidance offered is woefully inadequate.

BT is effectively wiping thousands of loyal customers off the digital map to tidy up a spreadsheet. It is a masterclass in treating small clients like disposable line items.
