BBC Online - Looking for someone with a website that is designed to be environmentally friendly, or a green company that wants one

A BBC Online journalist is researching an article for part of the BBC News website about sustainable web design. 

He'd like to build a human interest angle into the story, so he's looking for someone who has just launched a site (ideally a business site) and has considered the environmental aspects in the design, or perhaps for someone who runs a green business and would like a greener website.

If you're interested in being put forward - can you give us some details to pass onto the journalist. Remember, you need to fit the criteria he is looking for otherwise he won't consider you.

We've taken steps to minimise our carbon footprint throughout with cards made from board which are both recyclable and compostable, not plastic and by minimising travel but as a startup with limited manpower and resources, have no idea how to go about the next step of creating a green website. I really would like to revamp my website so it is green. I have used websitecarbon.com and have found it is 96%dirtier than other websites!

I currently use Shopify, which is hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and I would love to get away from this (I don't use Amazon as a customer, so ideally don't want my business to give them money either!)

I spend a lot of time making my business as green as possible - this includes tree planting, recycled materials, biodegradable paca and consciously sourcing products, so my website having high green credentials would fit with the ethos

Originally, Buttercup had a beautiful WordPress website that loaded slowly. We made good progress with our physical products’ environmental impact, but our site wasn’t doing so well. In 2021 I completely redesigned it, even though I'm not a web developer. I went from not having much experience designing fast-loading websites to becoming an advocate for building sustainable websites. At the bottom of our web pages, you can see the carbon calculation badge for each page. These indicate how 'clean' our site pages are.

When designing our site we use the carbon website calculator and the badges to guide us in creating a carbon budget for each page. The quicker the load time the better for the environment and the closer we get to being cleaner than 85% of webpages tested. Not bad for a non web developer!

Yes. For sustainable website design, starting with an online content management system eg Joomla & Wordpress is ideal to cover environment reporting news stories as a blog, if you are not a journalist with decent coverage. Rest all depends who reads, where and what not, excerpts are blogs, content is not news, news media is a business and medium is the message. Why start one, you can spread it like a virus, that you don't care for environment or people at all. In similar fashion, as one wear a lingerie to cover up oneself in another to wear another made to a traditional attire blasphemy showing and revealing even the minute details like the slips and slurps of any kinds, without wearing anything and then in it goes to the Press to publish more
