Bank predicts inflation will hit 11% - how will it impact you

ended 17. June 2022

The Bank of England is now expecting inflation to pass beyond 11% in October, from its current level of 9%. If you or your small business or charity are being hit particularly hard by inflation, and you'd like your story told in the media, tell us about it and we'll do our best to get it written up in the days ahead.

From a Financial Planning perspective the real danger here is people see the stock market dropping, they panic and withdraw their money at precisely the wrong time. In an attempt to prevent their money from potentially falling further they step into cash which will almost guarantee to loose them 10 to 15% over the next two years as the real value of that money falls due to inflation and the interest rates on savings accounts will offer little protection. Long-term, investors holding well-diversified portfolios will be able to ride out what is hopefully just another in a long line of crises.

We're going to hell in a hand cart, and we're going to hell in a hand cart because we won't be able to afford to drive ourselves there any more. Whilst government prevaricates whilst taking no action, they are condemning a vast swathe of the population to poverty. NOW is the time to act Rishi Sunak.

I am frankly terrified. 2008 never seemed quite this bad. Currently cutting back on absolutely everything that is non-essential for the family as a whole, and relying more on home grown vegetables rather than purchased. Currently hunting for a new job, but having to look for remote roles only because I can't afford petrol OR public transport costs at the current level.

For the first time since we launched just over 4 years ago we are raising our prices from 1st July . Our wholesalers and suppliers have raised their prices over the last few months and we can no longer absorb these costs. We are an online retailer and for the first time our sales have decreased we are still getting increased traffic to our website but people are not purchasing. With rising inflation we are concerned and together with our higher prices , sales will continue to decrease. We are remaining cautious on where we are spending our money whether on stock or marketing.

"As a small manufacturing and ecommerce jewellery business, I am deeply concerned about the rise in inflation. The past two months the toughest in our company's history. In April, sales plummeted by 35% and in May they where flat. I have been in the retail jewellery industry for 20 years and I have never been more anxious about the current economic situation we find ourselves in. With rising inflation, the cost of living crisis and consumer confidence being at an all-time low, we are currently on course for a retail apocalypse if the Government doesn't step in. For my business, sales are far worse now than they were in the pandemic! To try and increase sales we have had to offer more discounts, promotions and develop and craft cheaper products. This of course is not sustainable. With rising business costs and the ever-increasing gold price, we are been squeezed hard from all directions. The government is not doing nearly enough to support the retail sector during this time of economic uncertainty. They need to act now and reduce VAT to 5% like they did for the hospitality industry during the pandemic. Without immediate action from the Government, the rise in inflation will be the final nail in the coffin of the High Street and many small e-commerce retailers."

With inflation expecting to rise beyond 11% we are wondering if can continue to support our members as a grassroute expert by experience, voluntary and award winning, charitable group. We are one of the most underfunded and neglected characteristic disability, chronic illness and predominantly neurodivergent (autistic plus). We don't have spare money to buy in teams to do fundraising or raise our profile, we have to do everything ourselves yet at the same time so many of us are suffering. We are one of the most neglected areas of voluntary charity groups, underfunded due to disbelief or possibly stigma bias. Yet our conditions mainly around symptomatic hypermobility affects us throughout our bodies and heads. We need more aids, supports, from mobility aids, to chairs, beds, cars and regular outpatient and consultant appointments, many are delayed which means members have to rely now even more on our specialist knowledge, therapists and activities so as not to deteriorate. We have serious temperature fluctuations, so need more electricity, pumps, filters, special foods due to non direct allergies, special creams, many necessary drugs we have to buy ourselves. We often lose our employment, are often carers as well and need ongoing, regular but specialist therapies and activities. We have the expertise and skills to do this but we don't see this getting any better re funding it unless we are one of the big national charities. Is this the future way of funding health and care needs as we can only see this deteriorating and costing us all more money

Brexit knocked out my business exports, Covid impacted my wholesale and then the energy price increase squashed my sales completely. Within a week my sales dropped by 90%. At least 50% of the retail businesses i wholesale to have closed in the last 2 months. The economy right now is like a huge game of snakes and ladders, except it's all snakes and the only ladder is inaccessible to ordinary, working businesses. I started this journey 3 years ago, a single parent desperately clawing my way out of foodbank poverty with relentless 90 hour work weeks. This month i had to lower my prices in order to pay my rent, not raise them to meet inflation. Nobody has any money, everyone is struggling and I'm tired of fighting. I'm off back to Uni. The economy is broken and if i have to struggle financially, i'm going to add some extra letters after my name while i do. Bring on the packet noodles!
