Any intel on pensions? Especially triple lock

ended 20. February 2026

The media is keen on more pension stories. Especially on the triple lock?

  • Any intel? Please comment on any potential changes coming up.
  • Is the triple lock under threat? Or could it potentially end at some point soon?
  • Is there anything that people with a pension should do now? Any advice?

The pension triple lock, announced under Cameron, was the craziest giveaway to penioners. It’s continued for too long, and is on the verge of bankrupting the Uk. Welfare is the largest departmental spending, and the state pension takes up the biggest proportion of this. Future generations should have this generous benefit means tested to ensure there is enough money for the ‘welfare state’ to do what it was indended to- look after those who really need it.

The triple lock was designed to protect pensioners, but in its current form it isn’t a long term solution. It creates unpredictability for public finances without guaranteeing pensions keep pace with real living costs. Whether it ends soon or is gradually reshaped, the bigger issue is that people cannot rely on the state pension alone. The real risk to savers isn’t policy change it’s disengagement. Too many younger workers opt out or delay planning because retirement feels distant, and that behaviour compounds over time. A pension isn’t a “later problem” it’s a lifetime asset. The priority now should be education and participation: understanding how pensions work, staying enrolled, and increasing contributions where possible. The earlier people engage, the more control they have over their future security. Waiting until your 50s to think about retirement is the most expensive financial mistake people make. Time, not income, is the greatest pension advantage and once lost can’t recover.

Projections show that by 2035, the State Pension will cost more than is received in National Insurance contributions. We're kidding ourselves if we think the triple lock can be sustained.

The government needs to stop being so squeamish about how we prepare the nation's workers for the reality of a State Pension that is not going to cover the basic cost of their retirement.

We've just published analysis of 13,000+ workplace and personal pension funds and found that nearly 90% of funds in popular categories are underperforming a simple FTSE 100 benchmark. And yet research from Pensions Age shows that one in seven UK adults have never even checked their pension at all. According to Standard Life, 47% of UK adults are unable to estimate their pension pot size.

Much more effort needs to be put into getting workers engaged with their pension, helping them understand what they'll need for a comfortable retirement, and how to get it. Without this, we're heading for a catastrophe.
