Financial advisers could help clients avoid a common mistake that would help ensure treasured keepsakes are passed on in accordance with a late person’s wishes. That is according to research by worth.legal, the UK legal advice company which recently rebranded from Cardinal Wills. worth.legal found that 61% of Britons aged between 18 and 65 years do not have a will in place. The study, which was carried out by YouGov on behalf of the estate planning experts, also found that 19% of those who had not written a will had not done so because they felt their assets were not valuable enough to need one. Helen Gott, managing director at worth.legal, explains that assets did not need to be valuable to be considered a treasured keepsake. This means that failure to write a will could result in items of sentimental value not going to those the deceased would have intended, something she has seen happen “countless times”. “Many participants clearly feel that a will is something for other people when that isn’t the case,” she says. “It doesn’t matter how much assets are worth, a will sets out who they go to and could ensure assets with monetary or sentimental value goes to the right person. Thanks to the training we provide the advisers we work with, this is something that they can help clients without a will understand.” The research, which questioned 500 people between the ages of 18 and 65, also found that 1 in 10 said writing a will was too expensive.
