Following final preparations and a training camp, two Tynemouth rowers will shortly be departing for Namibia where they will be taking part in the Commonwealth Rowing Association Beach Sprint Championships. These are taking place at Walvis Bay from 2nd to 4th December with countries including Australia, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Jersey, Barbados, Bahamas, Namibia, Uganda, Kenya, Zambia and South Africa expected to attend.&nbsp; Tynemouth Rowing Club members, Natacha Searson and Hal Flowerdew will be competing for Jersey and England respectively, having been chosen for their respective countries in trials earlier in the year. Natacha is competing in the women’s singles category (CW1x) and in the Jersey relay team. Hal is in the mixed doubles (CMix2x) and will be competing in the England relay team as well.&nbsp; Beach Sprints are a relatively new concept in the sport of rowing. Single, double and quad boats can take part in a round robin knockout format which follows a time trial to seed competitors. Two boats compete in each race, where a rower from each boat will sprint around 20 - 30m on the beach from the start/finish line to the boat, they have to climb in as quickly as possible before setting off on a slalom course around three buoys, crashing into oncoming waves, over a distance of 250 metres, rounding the final buoy and returning to the beach in a straight line where one of the competitors will exit the boat and sprint to the finish. It’s an exciting format where races take between two and three minutes and is a great spectator sport.&nbsp;The sport will feature in the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, which is the first time that rowing will be in the Games for 40 years in any of its formats. Beach Sprints is also included on the programme for the 2023 World Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia, and the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal. It has also been formally proposed to the International Olympic Committee for inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Last weekend Natacha and Hal took part in an intensive training camp at Tynemouth and were joined by Hal’s doubles partner, Melissa Shaw who rows at Shoreham Rowing Club. As well as some endurance and technical training over several hours across the two days, they practiced some starts and finishes on Little Haven Beach in South Shields on Saturday and Sunday afternoons which attracted a lot of interest from people out walking.&nbsp; Speaking about Hal and Natacha, their coach, Mark Hyson who is the Men’s Captain at Tynemouth RC said ‘they thoroughly deserve their places in the England and Jersey teams, they are so committed to their training, the hardest thing for me is trying to get them to rest. If medals were awarded on effort, they should both get gold. I’m looking forward to seeing what they achieve.’ Natacha studies Medicine at Newcastle University, she said “I’m really looking forward to representing Jersey with the high level of competition in Namibia. It will be a great learning experience as it is my first international event. Hal and I have been training really hard and I’m excited to see where things go.” Hal is also a student at Newcastle University where he’s studying Biology. He was recently a quarter finalist in the Beach Sprints at the European Coastal Rowing Championships in San Sebastián in Spain, where he was narrowly beaten, only two seconds, by a Spanish rower, the eventual losing finalist, who was the second seed and reigning World Champion. Hal said, “I’m very excited to be going all the way to Namibia to compete in the mixed double for England. It has been a fun challenge going from the single which I’ve been racing all year, including in the European Championships, but I look forward to seeing what I can do! Training with Natacha has been a great help as my doubles partner, Melissa, is based over 300 miles away. The training camp we held here that Melissa was able to attend was really beneficial.” Earlier in the year, Robbie Collen and James Purves Liddell who did some limited training at Tynemouth, helped by Natacha, Hal and Mark, won a bronze medal in the World Championships in Wales in the Under 19 doubles category (CJM2x).&nbsp; Tynemouth Rowing Club will be running adult learn to row courses in the spring and possibly autumn 2023 if you are interested in the sport. The club have a number of members who just row recreationally but there are also opportunities to compete if you’re interested.
