I have over 10,000 hours first hand experience of a single mum on benefits, off benefits, in full-time work, in part-time work, in business, in debt, out of debt and crucially, started a business in adversity due to the childcare barriers locking me out of career progression. Despite completing a law degree to upskill as a single mother, presenteeism left me destitute. I spent years learning organic marketing methods whilst being battered by the system as I tried to help myself, and I escaped benefits and returned to financial independence, but it was so very hard to do when the system is set for you to fail. I set up the Single Mums Business Network in 2019 to help women who walked my path, fighting to support the economy instead of needing support, in the face of stigma and judgement. I published 'Breaking out of Benefits Jail' in 2019 to help anybody on Universal Credit escape it, as it is so very traumatic, and inadequate, as widely reported. So for single parents (primary carers) or those with other barriers to work, facing immense stress and negative income, small business owners, self-employed persons etc. I help to raise awareness of the shortcomings of the Government and DWP and use all of my tools to make it regardless.
