Will Iran war and Strait of Hormuz potentially being shut affect petrol prices in the UK?

The Sun is asking if petrol prices will go up in the UK as the Iran war intensifies and Iran threatens to close the Strait of Hormuz and oil prices go up globally.

  • Is now a good time for consumers to fill up their tanks ahead of any further hikes to oil prices?
  • When will they go up in response to global oil prices going up? How long does it take to affect UK petrol pumps?
  • Any predictions on how expensive it will be in a week, or two weeks?

The effect at the petrol pumps of even a partial closure of the Strait of Hormuz would be immediate and significant, and could spike UK petrol prices as 20% of global oil passes through the Strait.

Brent crude, up 15% to over $80/barrel, may push prices to 152p/litre very quickly. A full closure could see oil hit $100-$150, driving petrol up towards £2/litre.

It would be wise for consumers to fill up their tanks now, as the forecourts are never slow in passing on price increases to motorists.
