Why don't sweeteners help us lose weight?
A journalist at the Daily Telegraph is looking for snap reaction from dieticians/nutritionists and academics on why sweeteners don't seem to help us lose weight. Deadline is ASAP. Just a paragraph will do.

The problem with sweeteners is that they confuse the brain; the brain registers sweetness but without the associated calories. So it encourages cravings to bring in those calories. Sweeteners also encourage a sweet tooth, making it harder to reduce refined sugars, which ultimately will make it harder to lose weight. Cravings are difficult to overcome; best to avoid them in the first place!
