For the Daily Mail - I'm looking for commentary on the latest bitcoin rally. What is the outlook for the crytpocurrency - will it keep rising or is it set for another crash? What price could it reach? Are there alternative coins you would back instead?

Bitcoin is the genesis of crypto. Yes it is volatile, but over a longer period of time there aren’t many better investments. Why is Bitcoin rallying? Well, it’s likely because of the market’s perception that with bond yields shifting so rapidly higher, central banks will have to print money again if they want to regain control of the long end of the yield curve (longer term interest rates). If central banks lose control of the long end, it can cause havoc for borrowing costs, as we are seeing with the UK’s fiscal situation right now (they borrowed £1bn more than they thought in April just to keep the country running). Bitcoin was created as a fight against unsustainable monetary policy so any answer as to why it rallies over the longer term can be found in lack of trust in the monetary system.

With Bitcoin smashing through the ever symbolic $100k level once again, the crypto symphony is reaching a crescendo. However, investors need to remember that in the crypto casino, today's digital gold could become tomorrow's fool's gold in the blink of an eye. At these peak levels, the landscape is fraught with both opportunity and peril, as despite Bitcoin’s mainstream acceptance, it still behaves more like a speculative asset, so the substantial downside risk cannot be overstated. The Fed's current monetary policy outlook will play a pivotal role in shaping Bitcoin's trajectory, with the potential for institutional investors to reallocate capital back towards more stable returns, exerting downward pressure on Bitcoin's price, and amplifying the broader challenges facing the cryptocurrency ecosystem. You don’t want to bet against Bitcoin, but that doesn’t mean you need to bet with it either.

Despite the recent rally — and many analysts predicting further gains — I remain deeply sceptical about the need for, and value of, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. I share Warren Buffett’s view: it’s a speculative asset with no intrinsic value, driven more by FOMO than fundamentals. While it has defied gravity for years, I still struggle to see a compelling investment case. It produces no income, isn’t backed by assets and has limited real-world use as a currency. For UK investors, it’s also worth noting that due to recent Sterling strength, Bitcoin remains around 7% below its previous peak in GBP terms. For me, the risks still outweigh the potential upside.

Whilst cryptocurrency investments remain highly speculative and carry significant risks, Bitcoin is up 20% to date in 2025, driven by institutional adoption, ETF inflows, and Trump’s pro-crypto policies. The outlook remains bullish, with targets ranging from $135,000-$200,000 by year-end, but corrections to $70,000-$95,000 are equally possible due to volatility, tariffs, Fed delays, overbought conditions, or a shift to “Extreme Greed”. Technical analysis shows support at $106,000, resistance at $111,909. Altcoins like Ethereum, Solana, and XRP are possible alternatives. Stay cautious of macroeconomic risks and monitor technical levels for entry/exit points.

If in doubt, zoom out. The latest Bitcoin rally has been met with a small pull back but the longer term trend continues to outstrip any other asset class, including the mag 7. Institutional adoption is this bull run's catalyst for growth and could see a the market cap exceeding that of gold.

Bitcoin has rallied throughout May reaching new all-time highs, one of the main catalysts for the broader market, and Bitcoin was the easing off risk from a tariff perspective and a weaker Dollar, which means that investors generally need to look for higher risk investments to get a return. I am expecting Bitcoin to surge further through June and July with a seasonal Summer lull to follow. I expect Altcoins such as Solana to also rally in this period while the market stays risk-on.
