What new cars are you buying, if at all?

ended 04. July 2025

The latest official new car purchase data is out at 09:00 this morning. We're keen to find out whether you've bought a (new) car this year, and whether you opted for electric, petrol or diesel (and why). Or perhaps you've not even bought a car (or have sold the one you had) because of the ongoing cost of living crisis or increased business taxes and costs? Also, if you're happy to share, how do you tend to buy cars - in cash, via Hire Purchase, business lease or PCP? Lastly, have you been put off owning or buying a Tesla by Elon Musk's temporary political love-in with Trump?

Personally, I haven't indulged in a new car this year. The cocktail of soaring living costs and increased taxes on our business has made the prospect less appealing than a potholed B-road.

For those venturing into the market, the petrol versus electric debate is a kerbside conundrum. Electric cars promise a greener future, but with charging infrastructure still playing catch-up and the initial outlay remaining steep, many are sticking with tried-and-true petrol. Diesel, once the frugal favourite, has fallen out of favour thanks to flippant environmental penalties and burgeoning low-emission zones in Sir Sadiq's London.

Gone are the days when cash was king. Preserving capital is crucial, so Hire Purchase or PCP agreements make more sense, allowing funds to be allocated where they can yield actual returns, like in property ventures. Business leases can be tax-efficient, but only if the tax landscape doesn't shift from under our feet.
