Cornwall Council has a refugee resettlement service, but Cornwall appears largely outside of the main asylum dispersal areas. Landlords receive 5-year guaranteed rent deals through contractors like Serco for Asylum accommodation in the UK. The guaranteed rent model provides landlords with financial security that standard rental markets cannot match, drawing properties away from the general rental market and affecting availability for other tenants, exacerbating the shortage of long-term rental property locally in an area like Cornwall, full of second homes and Airbnb lets. Hotel accommodation costs approximately seven times more than dispersal accommodation. Cornwall's tourism-dependent economy makes hotel usage particularly sensitive.
