What do you need to say to secure a pay rise?

Writing a story this week about how you can negotiate a pay rise and I want some juicy details to include. I want to hear about how YOU have secured a pay rise in the past.  Not here for generic advice about ‘see what the market rate is’, ‘highlight your performance’ etc etc. I want to know EXACTLY what YOU said, in what context, and in what tone of voice - to secure the bag.

Last time I asked for a pay rise it was off the back of a year of successful sales. If you’ve got a track record of good performance, you know your boss won’t want to lose you, and you know you’re worth more than your current salary you’re guaranteed to get it if your confident but not cocky. Saying you’ve been contacted by a competitor might speed up the decision making process too!

Having been in the HR world for some time, I have been across the desk from these conversations, and seen some cracking approaches. Memorable ones include the employee setting a list of things they would achieve over the next 6 months, but only if their salary is raised by 10k with immediate effect. He was direct, honest and closed with "if you dont think this is worth it, I will go and put exactly the same argument to your competitor". In this case he was successful, and went on to do exactly as promised. I was impressed, and it was refreshing to hear someone put over a argument so assertively rather than the usual pitches where most people can't really articulate why a raise is deserved.
